Quartz wins on accuracy and cost. Automatic wins on being repairable forever. Everything else is preference — here are the numbers.

The short answer

Quartz is far more accurate, needs no servicing interval and costs a fraction to run. An automatic is less accurate and needs servicing about every three years at $176-296, but can be rebuilt indefinitely. Neither is better; they fail in different ways.

This is the first decision, and it gets argued badly. Enthusiast writing treats quartz as a downgrade, and the specification sheets treat automatics as a luxury. Neither framing survives the numbers.

The case for automatic

  1. It can always be rebuilt. Every part in a mechanical movement can be cleaned, lubricated or replaced. There is no component that ends the watch, as long as parts exist — which is why the caliber matters more than the case.
  2. No battery, no electronics. Nothing to leak, nothing to degrade in storage, nothing that becomes obsolete.
  3. It is genuinely interesting. A mechanical watch is a machine doing something visible and comprehensible. That is not a specification and it is the honest reason most people buy one.
  4. Parts availability is excellent at the entry level. The Seiko 4R and NH families are made in enormous volume, which is the strongest possible guarantee of long-term serviceability.

The case for quartz

  1. Accuracy in a different league. Seconds a month against seconds a day. If you have ever been irritated by resetting a watch, this is the fix.
  2. No servicing interval. Nobody publishes one, because there is not one. Batteries and eventually a module.
  3. A fraction of the running cost. Roughly $326 over twenty years on a solar watch against $1,056 for the cheapest mechanical here.
  4. It does not stop. Put it in a drawer for a year and it is still running and still right.
  5. Solar removes the last objection. No battery changes at all, and Citizen's Eco-Drive and Seiko's solar calibers carry the same warranties as their mechanical watches — five years at Citizen.

What quartz does not do

It cannot be rebuilt. When a quartz module finally fails — and they run for a very long time — it is replaced with a new module rather than repaired. For most owners that is a non-issue, and for someone whose entire objective is an object that can be brought back to life forever, it is the whole argument.

That is the honest boundary between them, and it is much narrower than the way this debate normally gets conducted.

The accuracy question, in perspective

A mechanical watch losing 10 seconds a day is out by about five minutes a month. A quartz watch out by 15 seconds a month is out by three minutes a year. That is a real difference, and whether it matters depends entirely on whether you enjoy the small ritual of correcting a watch or find it irritating.

Nobody at these prices is relying on a wristwatch for accuracy. Your phone is. So this is a preference question dressed as a technical one, and it is fine to answer it on preference.
