Under $200 the mechanical watches worth owning almost all come from Orient, because Orient names its in-house calibers and warrants them for three years. The Bambino Version 7 is the pick — 38.4mm, 44mm lug-to-lug and the smallest case in the line.

This is the floor. Below $200 a mechanical watch is usually an unnamed movement in a case with a one-year warranty, which removes the entire reason to buy mechanical in the first place — you cannot rebuild what nobody will identify.

Above it, one brand runs the tier almost unopposed. Orient names its calibers, they hack and hand-wind, and the warranty is three years — longer than Hamilton or Tissot offer at four times the money. What Orient does not do at this price is fit a sapphire crystal or rate anything above 30m, and both of those matter.

Acrylic looks like the budget option and on a long horizon it quietly is not: it scratches in the first week and every mark polishes out with a cloth and a few dollars of paste, indefinitely. Sapphire cannot be polished at all.

40mm, 13mm thick, 20mm lugs, 50m. Timex names no caliber, which is the real cost here — you cannot find out what a service will cost, or whether parts exist.

Acrylic reads as a downgrade and mostly is not: it scratches easily and polishes out with a cloth and a tube of paste, which sapphire does not. On a watch you intend to keep for decades, that is a feature.

Version 7 fixes the Bambino's long-standing size problem. 38.4mm across and 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small, and 12.5mm keeps the domed profile without looking clumsy.

The F6724 is Orient's own, it hacks and hand-winds, and the three-year warranty is the longest anywhere near this price. Domed mineral and 30m are the two compromises, and the 30m is the one that will bite.

A 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small by modern standards, and this is the Bambino to buy if the 40.5mm versions never sat right. The domed mineral crystal is the compromise, and it is the one Orient never fixes on this line.

An aperture showing the balance wheel oscillating is, for a lot of people, the moment a mechanical watch stops being an abstraction. At this price it is an unusually cheap way to get it.

40.5mm, 46mm lug-to-lug, 12mm thick, on the FT622 with the same three-year warranty. A 21mm lug width is a permanent minor annoyance.

The aperture is the reason to buy it and the reason to think twice — an open dial is a taste that dates faster than a plain one. The movement underneath carries the same three-year Orient warranty as the rest of the line.

Small seconds at this price usually means a module added to a center-seconds movement. Orient's F6222 does it properly, which is why the sub-dial sits where the architecture puts it rather than where a designer wanted it.

40.5mm and 46.5mm lug-to-lug at 12mm thick, on a champagne dial. Domed mineral, 30m and 21mm lugs are the recurring Bambino compromises.

Small seconds at this price normally means a module bolted onto a center-seconds movement. Orient's F6222 does it properly. The 21mm lug width is the tax you pay at strap-buying time.

This is the version of the Bambino to think hardest about. Weekday, date and a 24-hour sub-register look generous on a specification list and cost 2.2mm of case height against the Version 7 — 14.2mm against 12.5mm, on a watch rated 30m and styled as a dress piece.

A 14.2mm dress watch will not go under a shirt cuff comfortably, which is the one job the category exists to do. Add domed mineral and a 21mm lug width and the trade stops making sense.

If you want a Bambino, buy Version 7. If you want the 24-hour register, the AK00 Version 3 one tier up has it with a domed sapphire crystal.

At 14.2mm this is the thickest Bambino here, which is what a day-date-24h module costs you in height. Worth it only if you will actually read all three.

Why one brand dominates this tier

Because Orient does the one thing that makes a cheap mechanical watch a sensible purchase: it tells you what is inside. F6724, F6222, FT622 — named, in-house, hacking, hand-windable calibers with a three-year warranty behind them.

That matters more than any single specification. A watch with a named movement can be quoted for by any independent, has documented parts, and can be brought back to specification in 2050. A watch whose maker will only say "automatic" cannot, whatever the case is made of.

What this tier does not give you

  • Sapphire. Orient fits domed mineral across the Bambino line and does not deviate. It looks lovely and it will collect permanent marks under a shirt cuff.
  • Water resistance. 30m is rain and hand-washing. Not showering, not swimming. On a watch worn daily this is the specification most likely to end it.
  • Published service pricing. Orient publishes no US list, so an overhaul is a quote rather than a number.
  • Standard lug widths, half the time. 21mm on three of the five here means a thinner strap market forever.

All four of those are fixed one tier up, and the under $300 page is where Seiko arrives with a published $176 overhaul price and 100m as standard. If you can stretch, that is the stretch worth making.
