Water resistance explained
The meter figure on a dial is a pressure test, not a depth limit. Here is what each rating actually allows, and why it does not last forever.

The short answer
A water resistance rating is a static pressure test, not a depth you can swim to. 30m means rain and hand-washing only. 50m adds brief immersion. 100m covers swimming. 200m and above is diving. No watch is waterproof, and every rating degrades as gaskets age.
The number on the back of a watch is the single most misread specification in the industry, and misreading it is the most common way an otherwise healthy watch dies.
It is not a depth. It is a pressure the case survived in a laboratory, on a new watch, in still water at a stable temperature — none of which describes a shower.
The ratings ladder, in practice
- No rating or "splash resistant". Rain and nothing else. Citizen rates the Corso AW1236 this way, with no meter figure at all — which is why it is named as a skip on several lists here.
- 30m (3 bar). Rain and hand-washing. Not showering, not swimming. This is the rating on most dress watches, including the Orient Bambino line and the Tissot Le Locle.
- 50m (5 bar). The above, plus brief accidental immersion. Still not swimming. Seiko's Presage Cocktail Time and Hamilton's Khaki Field Mechanical sit here.
- 100m (10 bar). Swimming and snorkelling. This is the sensible floor for a watch you intend to wear daily without thinking. Most Seiko 5 Sports, the Hamilton Murph and the Citizen Chandler are 100m.
- 200m (20 bar) and above. Diving. At this level the construction changes — screw-down crown, screwed case back, better gaskets — and that construction, more than the depth, is what makes these watches survive ordinary life.
Water resistant is not waterproof, and that is a legal distinction
"Waterproof" has been effectively unusable in watch marketing for decades, because it implies a permanent and absolute property that no watch has. "Water resistant" is the accurate term: the case resists water to a tested pressure, when new, under laboratory conditions.
The two standards, and the word on the dial
There are two ISO standards, and the difference between them is genuinely useful information printed right on the dial.

A watch marked "200m diver's" has been through the harder regime. A watch marked simply "200m" has been tested to the general standard. Both are perfectly good for swimming; only the first was built for diving, and manufacturers may only use the marking if the watch qualifies — which makes it a real signal rather than a styling choice.
The part almost nobody is told
Water resistance is not permanent. Seiko states it plainly in its own customer documentation: a watch's water resistance is affected by the ageing of gaskets and by deformation of watch parts from accidental shocks.
In practice this means a five-year-old 200m watch that has never been serviced is not a 200m watch any more, and nobody has told its owner. Gaskets are rubber; rubber hardens, compresses and loses its seal. A knock on the crown can deform the tube it seats into.
The fix is cheap and almost nobody does it: a partial service, which is gaskets and a pressure test rather than a full overhaul. Tissot charges $60 and Hamilton €60. For a watch you intend to keep, that is the highest-value maintenance available, and it is the reason it appears in what a watch costs to keep.
The crown, which is where water actually gets in
The crown stem is the largest deliberate hole in a watch case. A push-pull crown seals it with a gasket. A screw-down crown seals it mechanically, by threading the crown against the case.
The practical difference is not the seal quality so much as the failure mode: a push-pull crown can be pulled out by a sleeve or a bag strap without you noticing, and a watch worn all day with the crown out is a watch with an open hole in it. A screw-down crown cannot do that.
Rules that will keep a watch alive
- Never operate the crown or pushers underwater, on any watch, at any rating.
- Always check the crown is screwed down before water, on watches that have one.
- Avoid hot water and steam — showers, saunas, hot tubs. Heat is harder on gaskets than depth is.
- Rinse in fresh water after the sea. Salt crystallizes in the gaps around the crown and bezel.
- Get gaskets replaced and a pressure test done every few years if you swim in it. $60 well spent.
Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between water resistant and waterproof?
"Waterproof" implies an absolute, permanent property that no watch has. "Water resistant" is accurate: the case resisted a tested pressure when new, under laboratory conditions, and that resistance degrades as gaskets age.
Can I shower with a 100m watch?
It will very likely survive, but hot water is harder on gaskets than cold, and soap degrades them over time. If you do it daily for years, it is worth budgeting a $60 partial service more often than you otherwise would.
Can I swim with a 50m watch?
Manufacturers rate 50m for brief accidental immersion rather than swimming. It will often be fine, and it is outside what the maker will stand behind — which matters if a warranty claim ever depends on it.
How does watch water resistance work?
Gaskets — rubber or synthetic rings — seal the crystal, the case back and the crown tube. Pressure from outside squeezes them tighter, which is why static depth ratings are conservative: the failure mode is a hardened or displaced gasket, not the case being crushed.
Does water resistance wear off?
Yes, and Seiko says so in its own documentation: resistance is affected by ageing gaskets and by deformation from knocks. A five-year-old unserviced 200m watch should not be treated as a 200m watch.
What does 'diver's' on a dial mean?
It means the watch meets ISO 6425, the divers' watch standard, which is a harder test regime than ISO 22810 for general water-resistant watches. Manufacturers may only apply the marking if the watch qualifies.
