Buy the Khaki Field Auto 38mm: it is mechanically identical to the Murph, and Hamilton publishes its 47mm lug-to-lug, which the Murph's page does not. Buy the Mechanical if you want the thinnest case at 9.5mm and don't mind winding, and the Titanium if you want a lighter 42mm.

The Khaki Field is the most consistently recommended affordable field watch there is, and Hamilton makes enough versions of it that choosing is harder than it should be. Every one below shares an 80-hour movement, a sapphire crystal, a Nivachron antimagnetic hairspring and a two-year warranty. What differs is small, specific and published — so this page sticks to that.

The Murph is the Khaki Field Auto with the dial from a well-known film and a folding clasp. Everything that affects durability is the same.

Buy it for the dial; buy the plain Auto if fit is what you are unsure about.

Hamilton fits Nivachron across the Khaki Field line — an antimagnetic hairspring, addressing the failure mode that used to send affordable mechanicals to the bench. This is a watch designed around the twenty-year case.

The same H-10 in a 42mm titanium case — about 40% lighter than steel at the same size, which is what makes 42mm comfortable all day.

The black PVD coating wears at the edges and cannot be refinished like brushed titanium.

Titanium plus PVD is the combination to think hardest about: the metal underneath is light and hypoallergenic, but a coating is a consumable — once it wears through at the lug edges, it is a refinish, not a polish.

The Pilot Pioneer Mechanical sits next to the Khaki Fields in Hamilton's Khaki range and is often cross-shopped against the Mechanical, because it uses the same 80-hour hand-wound H-50 in a charming 36mm x 33mm RAF-style case.

It has a mineral crystal, where every Khaki Field above has sapphire. On a watch bought to keep, that is the one difference that shows every day.

If you want the hand-wound H-50, the Khaki Field Mechanical above has it with sapphire.

Everything about this watch is right except the front of it. Hamilton fits a mineral crystal here and sapphire on the Khaki Field Mechanical at a similar level, which on a watch bought to keep is the difference between a case that ages and a face that does.

Hamilton publishes a two-year warranty, the 80-hour reserve and — for Europe — €230 for a full maintenance of an automatic two- or three-hand watch. It does not publish a US service price.
