Antimagnetic watches

Best antimagnetic watches

A magnetized balance spring is one of the classic reasons a mechanical watch suddenly runs badly. These are the watches whose makers fit a spring built to resist it.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38 is the best antimagnetic watch here: a Nivachron balance spring in an 80-hour H-10, with sapphire and 100m in a 38mm case. The Hamilton Pilot Day Date adds day and date at 42mm, and the Tissot Gentleman is the Swiss dress-leaning choice with 100m.

Everyday magnets — in phone cases, laptop lids and bag clasps — are the reason magnetism comes up at all. A magnetized balance spring is one of the classic reasons a mechanical watch starts running badly, and Nivachron is a balance-spring alloy that Hamilton and Tissot fit to resist it.

Every watch below is one whose maker states a Nivachron balance spring on its own product page. They are ranked on the same six specifications as everything else here.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Nivachron

A balance-spring alloy that Hamilton and Tissot fit to resist magnetism. Every pick here has it, as its maker states.

  2. 02Power reserve

    80 hours on every pick.

  3. 03Crystal and water

Sapphire on every pick; water ratings from 30m to 100m, printed on each.

  4. 04Warranty

Two years on all of them, from Hamilton and Tissot.

The H-10 with a Nivachron balance spring and 80 hours of reserve, behind sapphire and rated 100m, in a 38mm case with a 47mm lug-to-lug.

Two years of warranty and no US service price list.

Mechanically identical to the Murph and usually cheaper, because it does not carry a film's name. 47mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is a genuinely versatile footprint.

Mechanically the Khaki Field Auto, with the Murph's dial and a folding clasp.

Hamilton does not publish its lug-to-lug.

Hamilton fits Nivachron across the Khaki Field line — an antimagnetic hairspring, addressing the failure mode that used to send affordable mechanicals to the bench. This is a watch designed around the twenty-year case.

The same Nivachron H-10 in a 42mm titanium case — light for its size.

The black PVD coating will wear at the edges.

Titanium plus PVD is the combination to think hardest about: the metal underneath is light and hypoallergenic, but a coating is a consumable — once it wears through at the lug edges, it is a refinish, not a polish.

The H-40 with Nivachron and 80 hours, with day and date, behind sapphire and rated 100m.

42mm, and Hamilton does not publish the lug-to-lug.

Hamilton fits the same Nivachron hairspring here as on the Khaki Field line, and the H-40 runs 80 hours. Sapphire and 100m on a watch this legible is the pilot-watch specification sheet most of the category never manages.

Tissot states a Nivachron balance spring for the Gentleman, with 80 hours, sapphire and 100m, and publishes a $210 US service price.

An open heart, and a 21mm lug width.

The quick-release bracelet is the detail worth paying for: this is one of the few Swiss automatics at this level you can re-strap in thirty seconds without a tool.

A hand-wound H-50 with Nivachron in a 9.5mm case — the thinnest antimagnetic watch here.

Rated 50m.

No rotor means fewer parts and a thinner case, and the H-50 runs 80 hours on a wind. This is the simplest genuinely good mechanical watch on this site, and simple is what survives.

Nivachron with an 80-hour Powermatic 80 inside a 9.75mm dress case, under sapphire.

30m — keep it out of the shower.

Under 10mm thick with 80 hours of reserve is the combination that makes a dress watch practical — put it down on Friday and it is still running Monday. 30m means keep it off in the shower.

The Expedition Pioneer is a strong case: sapphire, 200m and a steel bracelet.

Timex does not publish the caliber, so there is no balance-spring material, antimagnetic claim or service price to check. If magnetism is the reason you are reading this page, buy a watch whose maker tells you what is inside it.

Sapphire and 200m for the money is real. What Timex does not publish is the caliber — which means you cannot look up what an overhaul costs before you buy, and that is exactly the number this site exists to check.

If your watch is already magnetized

A watchmaker can demagnetize a watch without opening the movement. If it keeps happening, look at what the watch sits next to every day. For a watch that keeps running through a weekend off as well, see the long power reserve automatics.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best antimagnetic watch?

The Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38: a Nivachron balance spring, 80 hours, sapphire and 100m. The Tissot Gentleman is the Swiss dress-leaning alternative.

What is Nivachron?

A balance-spring alloy that Hamilton and Tissot fit to resist magnetism. Every watch on this page has it, as its maker states.

Do all Hamiltons have Nivachron?

Not every one. The Khaki Field models and the Pilot Day Date state it; the Jazzmaster Skeleton and Pilot Pioneer Mechanical pages we read do not, so they are not on this list.

Can a magnetized watch be fixed?

Yes. A watchmaker can demagnetize it without opening the movement.
