Best Japanese automatic watches

The 6R55 runs 72 hours with a published tolerance of +25 to -15 seconds a day, in a 40mm case at 46.4mm lug-to-lug rated to 300m behind sapphire. Nothing else from any Japanese maker here combines those.

Seiko publishes what the 6R family costs to overhaul, which makes this the Japanese automatic whose twenty-year cost you can calculate before buying.

300m and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug in the same watch is unusual. The extender in the clasp is the detail that says Seiko still expects this one to be dived, not just worn.

Orient's in-house F6922 hacks and hand-winds, and it sits behind sapphire, 200m and a screw-down crown at a price where Seiko's 4R watches carry Hardlex.

What it lacks is Seiko's published service price. Orient is part of Seiko Epson and the calibers are made in volume, so parts are not the concern — the unknown is only what an overhaul will cost.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

The 4R36 is the most widely serviced mechanical caliber in the United States, and $176 to overhaul it is the lowest published price for any mechanical movement we cover.

The Turtle case reads 45mm and wears smaller; the crystal is Hardlex. For the lowest predictable cost of owning a Japanese mechanical watch, this is it.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

Orient's F6B24 with a day, date and 24-hour indicator behind domed sapphire, which is unusual on a dress-sport watch at this level.

42.5mm across, 50.5mm lug-to-lug and 14mm thick is a lot of watch, and 50m is the rating. Check the lug-to-lug against your wrist first.

Domed sapphire at this price is unusual and it is why this one is here. The 50.5mm lug-to-lug is not — that is a big watch, whatever the 42.5mm on the spec sheet suggests.

Orient Star is Orient's upper line, and the F6N44 adds a power reserve indicator and an open-heart aperture to the F-series architecture, with 50 hours of reserve, hacking and hand-winding.

43.2mm and 13.7mm thick, with a 21mm lug width. Orient Watch USA lists a two-year warranty on this page alongside copy referring to three; we score the shorter stated term.

The only openworked watch on this site rated to 100m with a screw-down crown, which is what makes it wearable rather than ornamental. The 21mm lug width is the catch: strap shopping will cost you more and take longer, forever.

Citizen is best known for Eco-Drive, and its automatics are the overlooked part of the range. The Tsuyosa pairs a hacking 8210 with 42 hours of reserve, sapphire as standard and Citizen's five-year warranty.

50m of water resistance and an integrated 9.1mm bracelet fitting are the limits, and Citizen publishes no service prices.

Sapphire and an in-house automatic for the money is genuinely rare. The catch is structural: Citizen lists the lug width as 9.1mm, which means the bracelet is the watch. When it wears out, no strap shop can help you.
