Orient vs Tissot

Orient vs Tissot

Orient makes its own movements and warrants them for three years; Tissot gives you 80 hours and a published service price. Here is how the value brand stacks up against the Swiss one.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Orient for the most watch in its tier: in-house automatics that hack and hand-wind, sapphire on the Kamasu and AK00, and three years of warranty. Tissot for ownership you can plan: 80-hour movements, sapphire across the range and a published $210 US service. The Orient Kamasu and the Tissot Gentleman are the best of each here.

Orient and Tissot are cross-shopped by buyers moving up from a first automatic, and they offer two different kinds of value. Orient puts its own movements and a long warranty into cases a tier below Tissot's. Tissot gives you a longer reserve, sapphire everywhere and a service price you can look up.

Sapphire, 200m and a screw-down crown around a hacking, hand-winding in-house F6922, with three years of warranty — one tier below Tissot's automatics.

40 hours of reserve, and no US service price list.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

An 80-hour Tissot automatic with a Nivachron hairspring, sapphire and 100m on a quick-release bracelet, with a published $210 US service.

Two years of warranty and a 21mm lug width.

The quick-release bracelet is the detail worth paying for: this is one of the few Swiss automatics at this level you can re-strap in thirty seconds without a tool.

The PRX: 80 hours, sapphire, 100m and a 10.93mm integrated case, with the same $210 published service.

The 12mm bracelet fitting is not a strap size.

Tissot publishes a US complete-service price of $210 for a mechanical two-or-three-hand watch, which makes this the most predictable Swiss automatic here to own. The 12mm lug width is not a strap size — the bracelet is part of the case.

Domed sapphire over an in-house F6B24 with day, date and a 24-hour sub-register, and three years of warranty.

42.5mm with a 50.5mm lug-to-lug, and 14mm thick.

Domed sapphire at this price is unusual and it is why this one is here. The 50.5mm lug-to-lug is not — that is a big watch, whatever the 42.5mm on the spec sheet suggests.

The Orient Star skeleton: an openworked F6N44 with a power-reserve indicator, sapphire, 100m and a screw-down crown.

Orient's page states two years of warranty beside copy referring to three, and the lug width is 21mm.

The only openworked watch on this site rated to 100m with a screw-down crown, which is what makes it wearable rather than ornamental. The 21mm lug width is the catch: strap shopping will cost you more and take longer, forever.

Under 10mm with sapphire and 80 hours — a thin dress watch that no Orient here matches.

Rated 30m.

Under 10mm thick with 80 hours of reserve is the combination that makes a dress watch practical — put it down on Friday and it is still running Monday. 30m means keep it off in the shower.

The Open Heart puts the balance wheel on show for not much money.

Against a Tissot dress watch it gives up the two things Tissot does best: sapphire, and a reserve that survives a weekend — 40 hours against 80. The Bambino V7 is the Bambino to buy; the Le Locle is the dress watch.

The aperture is the reason to buy it and the reason to think twice — an open dial is a taste that dates faster than a plain one. The movement underneath carries the same three-year Orient warranty as the rest of the line.
