44mm watches

Best 44mm watches

44mm is where a watch stops being everyday-sized and starts making a statement. These are the ones in the 43mm-to-45mm band worth wearing.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Seiko Prospex Turtle SRPE93 is the best watch in this size band: a 45mm diver's watch whose cushion case wears smaller than the number, on Seiko's published $176 overhaul. The Citizen Skyhawk is the 45mm flight computer, and the Citizen Promaster BN0200 is the 44mm diver in Super Titanium.

Large watches are unfashionable in some circles and exactly right on a large wrist. The 43mm-to-45mm band is where divers, chronographs and pilot's instruments naturally sit, because their dials need the room — and where fit is decided by case shape and lug length more than by the number on the spec sheet.

The seven below are ranked on the same six specifications as the 38mm to 42mm pages. For more on sizing a watch to a larger wrist, see the large-wrist picks.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Diameter

43mm to 45mm — the band that 44mm buyers are really shopping.

  2. 02Case shape

At this size, shape matters as much as diameter: a cushion case with no protruding lugs wears smaller than a round case with long ones.

  3. 03Crystal and water

Sapphire and 200m score highest, as everywhere on this site.

  4. 04Material

Titanium makes a 44mm watch far easier to wear all day.

A 200m diver's watch with a screw-down crown on the most widely serviced mechanical caliber in the US, with a published $176 overhaul and three years of warranty.

Seiko's 45mm figure is misleading in a good way: the cushion case has no protruding lugs, so it wears smaller. Hardlex rather than sapphire.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

Radio-synchronized time, a chronograph, a perpetual calendar and a second time zone behind sapphire, rated 200m, with five years of warranty.

A module rather than a movement: when it stops being made, the watch is finished.

It sets itself by radio, runs on light and is rated to 200m behind sapphire — and it is a module, not a movement. When the module stops being made, the watch is finished, however good the case still is.

A Swiss quartz chronograph with sapphire and 100m — and at 11.02mm, thin enough that 45mm wears flatter than you expect.

Two years of warranty; Tissot does not publish the lug-to-lug.

Tissot publishes a US service price list, which almost no chronograph maker at this level does, and PowerDrive drives the hands back to zero electronically instead of through a column wheel. Cheap to keep, and 45mm across.

Sapphire, 200m, a perpetual calendar and a chronograph that runs on light — and a 23mm lug width, which is the least common strap size on this site. It is a module rather than a movement, so its long-term future depends on Citizen continuing to support the H800.

The only openworked watch on this site rated to 100m with a screw-down crown, which is what makes it wearable rather than ornamental. The 21mm lug width is the catch: strap shopping will cost you more and take longer, forever.

A 44mm diver in surface-hardened Super Titanium, rated 200m and light-powered, with Citizen's five-year warranty — the lightest way to wear this size.

Mineral glass.

Citizen's Super Titanium is surface-hardened, which is the point — plain titanium marks more easily than steel, and this does not. It is the closest thing on this list to a watch you can stop thinking about.

The steel Promaster Diver: 200m, light power and five years of warranty on a 20mm strap.

Mineral glass, and heavier than the titanium version.

The strongest argument for this watch is the one Citizen makes on its own page: nothing to replace, five years of cover. The argument against it is the mineral crystal, which will scratch where sapphire would not.

The Fleuss has a strong specification: sapphire, a screw-down crown, 15 ATM and a Miyota 8215, with a stated two-year warranty.

At 43mm it sits at the small end of this band on paper, but Spinnaker publishes a 51mm lug-to-lug — the longest on this site. Diameter alone would tell you it is the most wearable watch here; the lugs say otherwise.

For a sapphire diver with a shorter footprint, see the [sapphire dive watches](/styles/dive-watches/best-with-sapphire).

Sapphire, 15 ATM, a screw-down crown and a stated two-year warranty on a Miyota 8215 — a caliber every independent has seen. Then Spinnaker publishes the lug-to-lug: 51mm, the longest on this site by a clear margin.

Is 44mm too big?

On a large wrist, no — and the large-wrist picks start here. On an average wrist, look for a cushion case like the Turtle's or a thin one like the Chrono XL's, and check the lug-to-lug where the maker publishes it. If 44mm is more watch than you want, the 42mm page is a size down.

Questions people actually ask

Is 44mm a good watch size?

For a large wrist, or for a diver or chronograph that needs a big dial, yes. On a smaller wrist it usually overhangs — check the lug-to-lug and the case shape first.

What is the best 44mm dive watch?

The Seiko Prospex Turtle SRPE93 on specification and service cost; the Citizen Promaster BN0200 if you want titanium and light power.

Does a 45mm watch always wear large?

Not always. The Seiko Turtle's cushion case has no protruding lugs, and the Tissot Chrono XL is only 11.02mm thick — both wear smaller than their diameters suggest.

Why is the Fleuss skipped when it is only 43mm?

Because Spinnaker publishes a 51mm lug-to-lug, the longest on this site. Diameter alone does not tell you how a watch wears.
