Quartz watches

Best quartz watches

Quartz is more accurate than any automatic here and costs a fraction to keep. The best quartz watches add sapphire, a real water rating and, increasingly, light power.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Citizen Garrison BM8560 is the best quartz watch here: solar, sapphire, Super Titanium, 100m and five years of warranty. The Tissot Chrono XL is the best battery quartz, a Swiss chronograph with sapphire, and the Timex Field Post Solar is the small one, at 36mm with sapphire.

Quartz has a reputation it does not deserve. A quartz watch is far more accurate than any automatic on this site, needs no service interval, and costs a fraction to run — the cost of ownership guide puts twenty years of solar quartz at a few hundred dollars at most. What gives quartz its reputation is how much of it is built cheaply.

The seven below are quartz watches built to be kept. Five are solar — quartz charged by light, so there is not even a battery to change — and two are battery quartz with a reason to exist.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Power

Solar where possible, so there is no battery to change. Battery quartz where the maker adds something worth having, like Tissot's end-of-life indicator.

  2. 02Crystal

Sapphire scores highest. A quartz watch is never taken off to wind, so it is often the one worn hardest.

  3. 03Water resistance

100m or more on most picks.

  4. 04Warranty

Citizen's five years lead; Timex's one year trails, with exclusions.

Light-powered quartz behind sapphire, in a Super Titanium case rated 100m, with Citizen's five-year warranty — a quartz watch with nothing to maintain and little to scratch.

42mm, and Citizen does not publish the thickness or the lug-to-lug.

Sapphire is the upgrade the 37mm Chandler never got, on a Super Titanium case with Citizen's five years of cover. Citizen publishes neither the thickness nor the lug-to-lug, so try it on before you commit to 42mm.

A Swiss quartz chronograph with sapphire and 100m, 11.02mm thick, with an end-of-life indicator that warns before the battery dies.

45mm across, with two years of warranty.

Tissot publishes a US service price list, which almost no chronograph maker at this level does, and PowerDrive drives the hands back to zero electronically instead of through a column wheel. Cheap to keep, and 45mm across.

Seiko publishes the accuracy — ±15 seconds a month — and the service price, $163, for this solar chronograph, which also has a power-reserve indicator and sapphire.

41.4mm with a 45.9mm lug-to-lug, and a 21mm lug width.

Seiko lists V-series solar service at $163 — cheaper than a 4R36 overhaul and far cheaper than a mechanical chronograph. The 21mm lug width is the annoyance: standard straps come in 20 and 22.

A 200m solar diver with Citizen's five-year warranty — the quartz answer to a dive watch you never service.

Mineral glass, and 44mm across.

The strongest argument for this watch is the one Citizen makes on its own page: nothing to replace, five years of cover. The argument against it is the mineral crystal, which will scratch where sapphire would not.

The Weekender is the quartz watch many people own first, and it is the reason many of them think quartz is disposable.

A brass case, a mineral crystal, 30m and a one-year warranty that excludes the crystal, strap, case and battery. Every watch above shows what quartz looks like when it is built to last.

A brass case at 30m, with a warranty that excludes the crystal, the strap, the case and the battery — which is to say almost everything that fails. Buy it as a strap-swapping toy, not as a watch to keep.

Battery or solar?

Solar, where the watch you want offers it: a rechargeable cell charged by light replaces the battery change. Citizen's warranty excludes that cell, which tells you it is the part that eventually wears. Battery quartz is simpler and fine if the battery is easy to reach. Automatic vs quartz covers the wider trade.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best quartz watch?

The Citizen Garrison BM8560: solar, sapphire, Super Titanium, 100m and a five-year warranty. For a battery quartz, the Tissot Chrono XL.

Are quartz watches good?

The good ones are the most practical watches there are: more accurate than any automatic, with no service interval. The difference between a good quartz watch and a disposable one is the case, crystal and water rating, not the movement type.

Is a solar watch a quartz watch?

Yes. A solar watch is a quartz watch whose rechargeable cell is charged by light — Vaer and Timex both describe theirs as solar-powered quartz.

Can a quartz watch last a lifetime?

The case and crystal can; the movement is replaced rather than rebuilt when it fails. Watches that last a lifetime sets out what that means.
