A milestone watch is a strange purchase, because the thing being bought is not really the watch — it is the next thirty years of the watch being around. That reframes every specification on the page.

What matters is whether it can be kept running, what that costs, and whether the design will still look deliberate in 2050. What does not matter is how impressive it looks in the box.

300m and sapphire in a 40mm case that is only 46.4mm lug-to-lug — capable enough to be worn for everything, compact enough to actually get worn, which is where most gift watches fail.

Seiko publishes $296 to overhaul the 6R and recommends it about every three years. That turns an open-ended commitment into a number the recipient can plan around for the rest of their life.

It is a dive watch, with the bezel and presence that implies. For someone who wears a suit daily, the Presage below is the better fit.

300m and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug in the same watch is unusual. The extender in the clasp is the detail that says Seiko still expects this one to be dived, not just worn.

A dress automatic rated 100m — unusual, since most are 30m — with sapphire, a published +25/-15 second daily tolerance and the same $296 published overhaul as the watch above.

40.2mm with a published 46mm lug-to-lug, and a dial with the restraint that will still read as deliberate decades from now.

The 80-hour reserve is the detail a recipient notices: left off over a weekend, it is still running on Monday.

The open-heart aperture is dial decoration, which is the one thing this page argues against on a watch meant to last.

It looks the part in a box — a dressy automatic with three complications at a fraction of everything above — which is exactly why it gets bought as a gift.

It is 14.2mm thick and rated 30m, under a domed mineral crystal that cannot be polished back, and Orient publishes no service price at all. The one thing a milestone gift should guarantee is that it can be kept going, and this is the least knowable watch here on that count.

If the budget points this way, spend it on a Seiko 5 Sports instead: less impressive in the box, still serviceable at a published $176 in thirty years.

At 14.2mm this is the thickest Bambino here, which is what a day-date-24h module costs you in height. Worth it only if you will actually read all three.

Why service transparency is the real gift

Every mechanical watch needs stripping, cleaning and re-oiling every few years. Whoever receives this watch inherits that obligation, and a maker who publishes the number has told them in advance what they are taking on.

Seiko publishes $176 for a 4R and $296 for a 6R. Tissot publishes $210 with 24 months of warranty on the work. Citizen, Orient and Timex publish nothing. Over thirty years that difference is larger than the gap in purchase price between most of these watches.

On engraving

An engraved caseback is a genuinely lovely thing and it has two costs worth knowing before you commit. It makes the watch very difficult to sell, and some service centers will decline to refinish an engraved caseback, so it may come back from a service looking less even than it went in.

If the sentiment matters more than the resale, engrave it. If you are not sure, engrave the box or the papers — the watch stays flexible and the message survives just as well.

Buying for someone who does not wear watches
