Microbrands give you more specification per tier — sapphire, titanium and 200m where Seiko's 4R models fit Hardlex. Seiko gives you a named caliber with a published US service price and a three-year warranty. For a first serious watch, Seiko; for the most specification in a tier, a microbrand like Baltic or BOLDR.

The microbrand argument is specification: take out the dealer and the advertising, and the same money buys sapphire, titanium and 200m. The Seiko argument is continuity: a named in-house caliber, a published overhaul price, and a company that will be around to supply parts. Seiko's 6R tier closes most of the microbrand specification gap — sapphire, 200m, 70 hours and a published accuracy tolerance — and adds what no microbrand here offers: a published $296 US overhaul and three years of warranty.

This is where Seiko starts publishing an accuracy figure (+25/-15 seconds a day) and fits sapphire. A 6R35 overhaul is $296 against $176 for a 4R36 — a real difference, and one you can plan for.

A diver's watch on the most widely serviced mechanical caliber in the US, with a published $176 overhaul and three years of warranty.

Hardlex — the one place a microbrand diver clearly beats it.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

The 4R36 is the most commonly serviced mechanical caliber in the United States and Seiko publishes a flat $176 price to overhaul it. That single fact does more for a twenty-year horizon than any spec on the case.

The NH38A is the movement every independent watchmaker already knows, which is the whole serviceability argument in one line. A 44mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is about as wearable as a 200m watch gets.

The Bradner has the microbrand specification — sapphire, a screw-lock crown, 18 ATM and a two-year warranty — and it is on Amazon.

Spinnaker does not name the caliber, so you cannot look up what a service costs, and it is 15mm thick with a 50mm lug-to-lug. The microbrand case is specification plus a known movement; without the second half, a Seiko is the safer purchase.

Sapphire and a stated two-year warranty at this price is a good trade. 15mm thick and 50mm across the lugs is not — this is a big watch, and the spec sheet says so plainly.
