Best chronographs for small wrists

Chronographs run big, because three sub-dials need room. These three do not — and the skip row shows why the case size matters.

The short answer

The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC947 is the best chronograph for a small wrist here: 41.4mm across but only 45.9mm lug-to-lug, with sapphire, 100m and solar power. The BOLDR Field Medic II is smaller still at 38mm and 44mm, and the Q Timex Chronograph is the 40mm quartz option on an 18mm bracelet.

A chronograph needs a larger dial than a three-hand watch to fit two or three sub-dials without crowding them, and most makers solve that by going to 42mm or more. On a smaller wrist, that is where the lugs start to overhang.

The three below fit. The Seiko is the lesson in why diameter misleads: 41.4mm across, but Seiko publishes a 45.9mm lug-to-lug — shorter than every 39mm watch on this site.

A solar chronograph with sapphire, 100m and a power-reserve indicator whose 45.9mm lug-to-lug is shorter than its diameter suggests, under Seiko's three-year warranty. Seiko lists V-series solar service at $163.

The Chrono XL is a strong chronograph for its tier: sapphire, 100m and a Swiss quartz movement, and at 11.02mm it is thinner than anything above it.

It is also 45mm across on a 22mm strap. Tissot does not publish the lug-to-lug, but no 45mm case fits a wrist the Field Medic is sized for.

On a larger wrist it ranks well among the [chronographs with sapphire](/styles/chronograph-watches/best-with-sapphire).

Tissot publishes a US service price list, which almost no chronograph maker at this level does, and PowerDrive drives the hands back to zero electronically instead of through a column wheel. Cheap to keep, and 45mm across.

How to check the fit

Measure across the top of your wrist, edge to edge, where the watch sits. If a watch's lug-to-lug is longer, the lugs overhang. Chronograph pushers also add width at three o'clock, which the lug-to-lug figure does not capture, so on a very small wrist the 38mm Field Medic is the safe choice.
