Dress watch vs dive watch

One is built to disappear under a cuff; the other is built to survive 200 meters. Most people can justify only one first — here is how to choose.

The short answer

Buy the dive watch first if you will own one watch: 200m, a screw-down crown and a legible dial survive everything, and it will sit on top of a cuff when it has to. Buy the dress watch first if you wear a cuff most days and already own something tough. The Seiko SPB453 and the Tissot Le Locle are the best of each here.

Dress and dive watches sit at opposite ends of the same trade. A dress watch is thin because it gave up the case depth that water resistance needs; a dive watch is thick because it kept it. Neither is better, but only one of them makes a sensible first or only watch.

300m, sapphire and a 72-hour 6R55 in a 40mm case with a 46.4mm lug-to-lug — a diver small enough to wear with a suit, on top of the cuff.

13mm thick, with a $296 published overhaul.

300m and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug in the same watch is unusual. The extender in the clasp is the detail that says Seiko still expects this one to be dived, not just worn.

Sapphire, 200m and a screw-down crown at 12.8mm — the thinnest diver here — with an in-house automatic and three years of warranty.

41.8mm on a 22mm strap.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

An open heart, and a 21mm lug width.

The quick-release bracelet is the detail worth paying for: this is one of the few Swiss automatics at this level you can re-strap in thirty seconds without a tool.

A certified diver's watch with a screw-down crown on the 4R36 and a published $176 overhaul.

Hardlex, and a 45mm cushion case that is no dress watch.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

Under 11mm, rated 100m, with sapphire and 80 hours — the closest thing here to one watch for both jobs.

The integrated bracelet cannot become a leather strap for a formal evening.

Tissot publishes a US complete-service price of $210 for a mechanical two-or-three-hand watch, which makes this the most predictable Swiss automatic here to own. The 12mm lug width is not a strap size — the bracelet is part of the case.

Under 10mm thick with 80 hours of reserve is the combination that makes a dress watch practical — put it down on Friday and it is still running Monday. 30m means keep it off in the shower.

The Bambino Small Seconds is a handsome dress watch with a properly integrated small-seconds movement.

Under mineral glass and rated 30m, it is the dress watch that most needs a tougher watch beside it. If it will be your only watch, buy a diver or the PRX instead.

Small seconds at this price normally means a module bolted onto a center-seconds movement. Orient's F6222 does it properly. The 21mm lug width is the tax you pay at strap-buying time.
