Bambino vs Tsuyosa

Orient Bambino vs Citizen Tsuyosa

Two in-house automatics a hundred dollars apart. The Citizen has the better crystal and the longer warranty. The Orient has the one thing the Citizen can never have: an ordinary strap.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Buy the Tsuyosa if it will be your only good watch: sapphire, a hacking 42-hour caliber and five years of cover beat the Bambino's mineral crystal and 30m rating, and it scores 7.7 against 6.3. Buy the Bambino Version 7 if you have a small wrist or intend to change straps — 38.4mm, a 44mm lug-to-lug and standard 20mm lugs are things the Tsuyosa structurally cannot offer.

Full write-up and the measured specifications are further down this page.

These are the two watches a first-time buyer of an affordable dress automatic actually ends up choosing between. The Bambino has been the default recommendation for a decade. The Tsuyosa arrived and undercut it on the one specification the Bambino has always been criticized for.

Both are in-house automatics from Japanese makers, both hack and hand-wind, and both cost a few hundred dollars. The decision comes down to a crystal, a warranty and a strap fitting, and those three facts point in two different directions.

On our six published specifications the Tsuyosa wins by 1.4 points, which is a wide margin on this site. The argument for the Bambino is not that the scoring is wrong — it is that two of the Tsuyosa's advantages are invisible in daily use, and one of the Bambino's is permanent.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Crystal

Sapphire against domed mineral. Decided at purchase and never after — the Bambino's crystal is the compromise Orient has never fixed on this line.

  2. 02Strap standardization

20mm standard lugs against a 9.1mm integrated bracelet. The Bambino takes any strap; the Tsuyosa takes exactly one.

  3. 03Fit

    38.4mm with a published 44mm lug-to-lug against 40mm with no published lug-to-lug at all.

  4. 04Water resistance

30m against 50m. Neither is a swimming watch, and both makers say so.

  5. 05What is identical

An in-house automatic that hacks and hand-winds, a stainless steel case, no published service price, and both on Amazon today.

Sapphire at this price is the headline and it is the Bambino's oldest weakness. A domed mineral crystal picks up hairlines from a doorframe; sapphire does not, and you cannot change your mind later.

Citizen states an 8210 automatic that hacks, with 42 hours of reserve, and covers it for five years — longer than Orient's three and more than double Hamilton's or Tissot's two.

The 9.1mm lug width is the price of the design. This is an integrated bracelet, so there is no strap to change, ever, and when the bracelet goes the watch goes with it. Citizen also publishes neither the lug-to-lug nor the thickness, so you cannot check the fit before it arrives.

Sapphire and an in-house automatic for the money is genuinely rare. The catch is structural: Citizen lists the lug width as 9.1mm, which means the bracelet is the watch. When it wears out, no strap shop can help you.

38.4mm with a published 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small, and it is the Bambino the line always needed — the 40.5mm versions simply did not work on a slim wrist. Orient publishes the number; Citizen does not publish one at all.

20mm standard lugs mean a leather strap today, a NATO next summer and a bracelet in ten years, all for very little money. That is the specification the Tsuyosa cannot match at any price.

The domed mineral crystal is the real cost, and 30m is the other. This is a watch for an office and a dinner, not a swimming pool, and the crystal will show its age before the movement does.

A 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small by modern standards, and this is the Bambino to buy if the 40.5mm versions never sat right. The domed mineral crystal is the compromise, and it is the one Orient never fixes on this line.

It fails this page because it is neither of the two watches asked about, and because Hardlex is not sapphire. We list it because it answers the question both of these dodge: what does it cost to keep.

Seiko publishes a flat $176 to overhaul a 4R caliber. Neither Orient nor Citizen publishes any service price for the watches above, which is a point each of them drops on our scoring.

At 40.5mm it is the largest of the three and the least suitable for a small wrist. Our best dress watches under $500 page ranks all three properly.

The same 4R35 and the same $176 published overhaul as the rest of the Cocktail Time line, with the lug-to-lug published — 47.5mm — so you can check the fit before buying. 50m and Hardlex are the dress-watch trade.

Why the Tsuyosa wins the arithmetic

Crystal is weighted at 2.5 points on this site because it is the one specification you cannot change after purchase without paying more than the watch is worth. Sapphire takes the full 2.5; domed mineral takes 1.0. That single line is most of the 1.4-point gap.

The rest is warranty and water resistance, where five years and 50m beat three years and 30m. Our sapphire versus mineral crystal guide explains what the hardness difference actually means in daily wear, and why a domed crystal makes it worse rather than better.

Why the Bambino can still be the right watch

Two of the Tsuyosa's wins are things you will rarely notice. You are unlikely to use 50m of water resistance on a dress watch, and a five-year warranty on a mechanical watch mostly covers faults that appear in the first year anyway.

The Bambino's win, by contrast, is one you can act on every month. A 20mm lug width means the watch can be a brown leather dress watch, a gray NATO and a black rubber summer watch for the price of three straps — and it means that in 2045 it is still wearable. The Tsuyosa has exactly one future, and it is Citizen's to decide. Our watches for small wrists page covers the 44mm lug-to-lug, which is the other thing the Bambino has and the Citizen will not tell you.

Which to buy

If this is the one good watch you own and it will live on its bracelet, buy the Tsuyosa — the crystal alone justifies it, and the five years are real.

If your wrist is under about 165mm, or if you already know you enjoy changing straps, buy the Bambino Version 7 and accept the crystal. Our best dress watches under $500 page ranks both against the rest of the field, and is the Orient Bambino worth it covers which Bambino to buy if you go that way.

Questions people actually ask

Orient Bambino or Citizen Tsuyosa — which should I buy?

The Tsuyosa if it will be your only good watch: it has sapphire where the Bambino has domed mineral, and five years of cover against three. It scores 7.7 to the Bambino's 6.3. Choose the Bambino Version 7 if you have a small wrist or want to change straps, because its 20mm lugs and 44mm lug-to-lug are things the Tsuyosa's integrated bracelet cannot offer.

Does the Orient Bambino have a sapphire crystal?

No. Orient fits a domed mineral crystal to the Bambino line, including Version 7, and has never changed it. The Citizen Tsuyosa has sapphire at a similar price, which is the single biggest reason it scores higher here.

Which is smaller on the wrist?

The Bambino Version 7, clearly. It is 38.4mm with a published 44mm lug-to-lug and 12.5mm thick. Citizen publishes no lug-to-lug or thickness for the Tsuyosa at all, so the 40mm case diameter is the only figure you get.

Can either of them be worn swimming?

No. The Bambino is rated 30m and the Tsuyosa 50m, which cover rain and hand-washing. Neither maker rates its watch for swimming.
