Both were designed to be read instantly by someone busy. One was built for the ground and stayed small; the other for the cockpit and grew.

The short answer

A field watch is the better only watch: 38mm, thinner, and usually rated 100m. A pilot watch is larger and more legible from a distance, and several classic fliegers are rated only 50m. If you want one, buy the field watch; if you want the flieger look, buy one with sapphire and check the water rating.

Field and pilot watches are the two styles designed entirely around being read in a hurry, which is why they look alike to most people and why buyers shortlist them together. The differences come from where each was used. Field watches were issued to soldiers and stayed small, so they did not catch on anything. Pilot watches were read in cockpits, often over a flying jacket, and were made large.

Hamilton's pilot watch has the specification most of the style skips: sapphire and 100m, on the 80-hour H-40 with a Nivachron hairspring and a day-date.

42mm and 11.85mm thick — larger than the field watches, and it wears that way.

Hamilton fits the same Nivachron hairspring here as on the Khaki Field line, and the H-40 runs 80 hours. Sapphire and 100m on a watch this legible is the pilot-watch specification sheet most of the category never manages.

The closest modern equivalent of an issued field watch: hand-wound, 38mm and 9.5mm thick, with sapphire where the originals had acrylic.

50m is the limit.

No rotor means fewer parts and a thinner case, and the H-50 runs 80 hours on a wind. This is the simplest genuinely good mechanical watch on this site, and simple is what survives.

The Nighthawk is the most-bought affordable pilot's watch: a slide-rule bezel, dual time, 200m and light-powered, with five years of warranty.

It has a mineral crystal on a 42mm dial, and Citizen does not publish its lug width. Against a field watch with sapphire, it is the one that will show its age first.

What is the difference between a field watch and a pilot watch?

Both are built for legibility. Field watches are small — 36-39mm — and usually rated 100m. Pilot watches are larger, with oversized numerals and crowns, and descend from 55mm observation watches.

Is a pilot watch good for everyday wear?

If the size suits you and the water rating is adequate. The Hamilton Pilot Day Date is 42mm and 100m; several fliegers, including the Laco Augsburg, are rated 5 ATM.

Which is more legible, a field watch or a pilot watch?

The pilot watch, at a distance — larger numerals on a larger dial. At arm's length, both are designed to be read in a glance.

Can I swim with a pilot watch?

With a 100m or 200m one, yes — the Hamilton Pilot Day Date and the Citizen Nighthawk. A 5 ATM flieger is for rain and hand-washing.
