Buy the Vaer C5 Recon if you want the better-built one: 10.4mm thick with a screw-down crown, a published accuracy figure and two years of warranty. Buy the Timex Field Post Solar if you want it small and cheap — 36mm with a 44.5mm lug-to-lug, sapphire and 100m, for considerably less.

A solar field watch is arguably the most practical object in this hobby: it runs on light, needs no winding, needs no battery, and has no service schedule at all. These are the two on this site, and they are aimed at different people.

Vaer builds a 40mm watch with a screw-down crown and assembles it in the United States. Timex builds a 36mm one that costs a fraction and fits almost any wrist. Both have sapphire and 100m, which is the floor this category should meet.

10.4mm thick with a locking screw-down crown — the only watch here that seals the largest opening in the case mechanically rather than with gaskets alone. On a watch meant for weather, that is the specification that ages best.

The Epson VS-42 is rated -10/+20 seconds a month with a six-month reserve, and Vaer publishes both figures. 40mm across with a published 48mm lug-to-lug, and assembled in the United States according to Vaer.

Two years of warranty and sold direct, so we earn nothing on this link — and at 48mm lug-to-lug it is a real 40mm watch, not a small one.

36mm with a published 44.5mm lug-to-lug and 12mm thick — the smallest field watch on this site, and the one that fits wrists the Vaer overhangs.

Sapphire and 100m at this price is genuinely unusual, and light power means no battery change and no service interval.

A push-pull crown rather than a screw-down one, an 18mm strap width where most field watches are 20mm, and Timex's one-year warranty explicitly excludes the crystal, strap, case and battery.

The Corso turns up on solar shortlists constantly because it is light-powered, well made and covered by Citizen's five-year warranty.

Citizen rates it 0m. Not 30m, not splash-resistant — no stated water resistance at all, which rules it out of a category defined by being worn outdoors.

If you want Citizen's five years in something that can handle weather, the Garrison is 100m with sapphire on a Super Titanium case.

Citizen publishes no meter rating for this one — the field on its own product page reads “Splash Resistant”. For a watch you intend to keep and wear daily, that is a hard stop, not a footnote.

Why the crown type matters here

Both watches are rated 100m, and on a static pressure test both earn it. The difference shows up over years: a push-pull crown relies entirely on gaskets, and gaskets age, compress and dry out. A screw-down crown adds a mechanical seal that does not depend on the gasket being fresh.

Solar is the right movement for this style

A field watch should be the watch you stop thinking about. Light power removes winding, battery changes and the service schedule in one go, and both of these hold a reserve measured in months rather than days.

The trade is permanence: a solar module is replaced rather than rebuilt when it eventually fails, which depends on the maker still supplying it. If you want a field watch to hand on, best automatic field watches is the page for that.

Which to buy

If the watch is going to live outdoors and you want it to last, the Vaer is the better object — thinner, sealed properly, with published accuracy and twice the warranty. If your wrist is under about 16.5cm, or you want the cheapest sapphire-and-100m solar watch there is, the Timex is the one that fits and the one that costs least.
