The short answer

For a first GMT, buy a caller — where you set the 24-hour hand and leave the local hand alone — because that is the mechanism most people actually need. The Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK023 at 39.4mm is the beginner-friendly size; the 42.5mm SSK001 is the one people regret.

A GMT is the one complication on this site that still does something a phone does more clumsily, because it is already on your wrist. It is also the one most often bought for the wrong reason and in the wrong size.

How it works, in one paragraph

A fourth hand rotates once every 24 hours instead of twelve, read against a 24-hour scale on the bezel or the dial edge. Set it to a second time zone and you can read that zone at a glance without arithmetic. On a rotating 24-hour bezel you can turn the scale to follow a third zone as well.

Nearly everybody buying a first GMT is a caller who has read that flyers are "true" GMTs. If your second time zone is family or colleagues rather than your own itinerary, a caller is the right watch and the money saved is substantial.

The same mechanism as the better-known SSK001 in a case 3mm narrower, which is the difference between a watch you wear and one you admire in a drawer.

47.9mm lug-to-lug and 13.6mm thick — small-to-medium rather than genuinely small, but far more manageable than the 42.5mm version for a first watch of this kind.

The bezel is fixed rather than rotating, so you cannot track a third zone. On a first GMT that is a feature you were unlikely to use.

Identical movement and identical service cost to the SSK001 in a case 3mm narrower. If the 42.5mm SSK001 is too much watch, this is the same purchase in a size more wrists can carry.

If you are not sure you will use a second time zone, this answers the question for a fraction of the price. 38mm, steel, an 18mm lug width, and a battery any shop can change.

The acrylic crystal will scratch and will polish back to clear with a cloth and paste. 50m and a one-year warranty excluding the crystal, strap and case are the limits — and at this price they are acceptable ones.

A quartz GMT at 38mm, with an acrylic crystal you can polish and a battery any shop can change. It is not built like the mechanical GMTs on this site, but nothing about it is expensive to keep running.

The SSK001 is the watch that created this category and it is genuinely good — a rotating 24-hour bezel that lets you track a third zone, on the same $176 service path.

It is also 42.5mm across and 13.6mm thick, and it is the single most common size regret we would expect from a first GMT purchase. A GMT dial is busy, the case is deeper than the three-hand equivalent, and 42.5mm of that is a lot of watch to start with.

Buy it as a second or third watch, when you know how a 42.5mm case sits on you. As a first GMT, buy the SSK023 above — identical mechanism, 3mm narrower.

The 4R34 is a caller GMT — the 24-hour hand is the one you set, not the local hand — but it is a real mechanical second time zone on a movement whose service price Seiko publishes.

How to set a caller GMT

  1. Pull the crown to the first position and turn until the 24-hour hand points at the correct hour in your reference zone, on the 24-hour scale.
  2. Pull to the second position and set the local time normally.
  3. Push the crown home — and screw it down if the watch has a screw-down crown.
  4. If the bezel rotates, you can turn it to offset a third zone against the 24-hour hand.

The order matters: setting local time first and then the 24-hour hand usually means doing it twice.

Two things that catch first-time buyers

  • A 24-hour sub-register is not a GMT hand. Several dress watches — including Orient's AK00 — have a 24-hour sub-dial that shows AM/PM in your own zone. It is driven by the same hour hand and cannot be set independently.
  • GMT cases are thicker. The SSK001 is 13.6mm against 13.4mm for the three-hand SRPD55, and the dial is busier. Both make the watch wear larger than the diameter suggests.

Do you need one at all?

If you do not have a specific second time zone in mind right now, you will not use the hand, and the watch becomes a busier dial in a slightly thicker case. That is a fine reason to buy — dials are allowed to be enjoyable — but it is not the reason the marketing gives, and being clear about which applies will save you a purchase you do not enjoy.

Are GMT watches useful?

If you regularly need to know the time somewhere else, genuinely — and more conveniently than a phone, because it is already on your wrist. If you do not, the hand is decoration.
