True GMT vs caller GMT

Every GMT shows a second time zone. The difference is which hand you move when you land somewhere new — and that decides who each kind suits.

The short answer

On a true GMT you set the local hour hand on its own, so changing time zones takes seconds — the traveler's choice. On a caller GMT you set the 24-hour hand on its own, which suits tracking one fixed zone from home. The Baltic Aquascaphe GMT is a true GMT; Seiko's SSK001 and SSK023 are caller GMTs.

The difference sounds technical and turns out to be practical. A GMT shows two time zones: local time on the normal hands, and a second zone on a 24-hour hand. When you change time zones, one of them has to move. On a true GMT — also called a flyer's GMT — the local hour hand jumps on its own, so you reset local time on arrival and home stays on the 24-hour hand. On a caller GMT — also called an office GMT — it is the 24-hour hand that moves on its own.

Neither is better. A true GMT is quicker for a traveler; a caller GMT is what most affordable mechanical GMTs are, and it is ideal for keeping one fixed zone in view from home.
