Orient Bambino Version 7 RA-AC0M03S30B

Best Bambino

Best Orient Bambino watches

Four versions, one movement family, one shared flaw. The decision is size and dial — and the smallest one is the one most people should buy.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Buy the Bambino Version 7. At 38.4mm with a published 44mm lug-to-lug it is the smallest and best-proportioned of the four, with the same in-house Orient automatic, the same three-year warranty and the same 20mm standard lugs. Every Bambino shares one flaw: a domed mineral crystal and a 30m rating.

The verdict first: buy the Bambino Version 7. It is 38.4mm across with a published 44mm lug-to-lug — genuinely small by modern standards and the best-proportioned watch in the line — and it is the only one of the four with a standard, even 20mm lug width. Same in-house Orient automatic, same hand-winding and hacking, same three-year warranty as the rest.

What follows is the honest part. All four Bambinos share a domed mineral crystal and a 30m water rating, and those two lines are why none of them scores above 6.3 here. Mineral collects scratches that cannot be polished out, and a domed crystal presents more of itself to the door frame than a flat one does. 30m means rain. Our is the Orient Bambino worth it page answers the yes-or-no question; this page answers the one that comes after it — which version.

The movements differ in detail and not in kind. The F6724 in Version 7, the F6B24 in Version 9, the FT622 in the Open Heart and the F6222 in the Small Seconds are all in-house Orient calibers with roughly 40 hours of reserve, hand-winding and hacking. There is no version here with a meaningfully better movement, so do not choose on that basis.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Published lug-to-lug

Orient publishes a figure for all four, which is unusual and genuinely useful. On a dress watch the footprint decides whether it sits under a cuff or on top of it.

  2. 02Thickness

The range here runs 12mm to 14.2mm, and the thickest is the one with the most dial functions. That is not a coincidence.

  3. 03Crystal

Domed mineral on every version. It is the line's defining compromise and the reason no Bambino scores above 6.3 on this site.

  4. 04Water resistance

30m on all four, read from Orient's own pages. Rain and handwashing — this is a dress watch, and the rating says so.

  5. 05Strap standardization

Version 7 uses a standard, even 20mm. The other three use 21mm, which is odd — stocked, but more expensive and slower to find.

44mm of published lug-to-lug is genuinely small by modern standards, and it is the number that makes this the one to buy. The 40.5mm and 41.5mm versions reach 46mm and 47mm, which is a visibly bigger watch on the wrist for the same money.

It is also the only Bambino with a standard, even 20mm lug width. The other three use 21mm, which is stocked but costs more and takes longer to find — a difference that repeats every time a strap wears out, for as long as you own the watch.

The in-house F6724 hand-winds and hacks, with about 40 hours of reserve, under Orient's three-year warranty. For a dress automatic, there is not much more to want at this level.

The compromise is the one the whole line shares, and Orient has never fixed it: a domed mineral crystal that will collect marks you cannot remove, and 30m of water resistance. It scores 6.3, the highest of the four, and almost all of the gap to the eights is those two lines.

A 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small by modern standards, and this is the Bambino to buy if the 40.5mm versions never sat right. The domed mineral crystal is the compromise, and it is the one Orient never fixes on this line.

An aperture over the balance wheel is the cheapest way onto this site's openworked list, and the in-house FT622 underneath carries the same three-year Orient warranty as the rest of the line. At 12mm it is also the thinnest Bambino here.

The footprint is 46mm on a 40.5mm case, which is 2mm more watch than Version 7 — not dramatic, but noticeable if your wrist is small.

The aperture is the reason to buy it and the reason to think twice: an open dial is a taste that dates faster than a plain one, and you are looking at the same mineral crystal and 30m rating as every other Bambino. It scores 5.9. Our best skeleton watches page sets it against the openworked watches that have sapphire and 100m instead.

Small seconds at this price normally means a module bolted onto a center-seconds movement. Orient's F6222 does it properly, which is the reason this version exists and the reason collectors like it.

12mm thick on a 40.5mm case with a 46.5mm footprint — the same proportions as the Open Heart, with a quieter dial.

Two things to know. The 21mm lug width is the tax you pay at strap-buying time, and Orient does not list this reference on Amazon, so the link below goes to Orient Watch USA and earns us nothing. It scores 5.9, the same as the other two 40.5mm-class versions.

This is not a Bambino, and it is on the page because it is the answer to the Bambino's one real problem. The AK00 is the Orient dress automatic with domed sapphire instead of domed mineral, plus 50m instead of 30m and a standard, even 22mm lug width.

Those three lines lift it to 8.0, which is nearly two full points above the best Bambino, on the same in-house F6B24 movement and the same three-year warranty.

The cost is size, and it is substantial: 50.5mm of published lug-to-lug on a 42.5mm case, 14mm thick. That is a big watch whatever the spec sheet suggests, and it is the opposite of what makes Version 7 worth buying. If a 44mm footprint is why you are reading this page, the AK00 is not your watch.

Domed sapphire at this price is unusual and it is why this one is here. The 50.5mm lug-to-lug is not — that is a big watch, whatever the 42.5mm on the spec sheet suggests.

On paper this is the most functional version: weekday, date and a 24-hour sub-register on the in-house F6B24, with the same hand-winding, hacking and three-year warranty as the rest of the line.

It is also 14.2mm thick, nearly two millimeters more than any other Bambino, and that is precisely what the day-date-24-hour module costs in height. A dress watch exists to disappear under a cuff; this is thicker than most of the dive watches on this site. You are paying that height for three displays, on a watch rated 30m behind a mineral crystal, and most owners will read one of them.

47mm of published lug-to-lug makes it the longest of the four as well, and it uses the line's odd 21mm lug width. It scores 5.9. Buy it only if the other Bambinos look small on your wrist — in which case the Orient AK00 above is the better answer, with sapphire, 50m and a standard 22mm fitting.

At 14.2mm this is the thickest Bambino here, which is what a day-date-24h module costs you in height. Worth it only if you will actually read all three.

The Bambino problem, stated plainly

Orient has sold this line for over a decade and has never put sapphire on it. Every Bambino here uses a domed mineral crystal, and the dome is the part that makes it worse rather than better: a raised crystal meets door frames, desks and car doors before the case does, and mineral scratches are permanent. Sapphire takes 2.5 of 2.5 in our formula and mineral takes 1.0, so that single decision is 1.5 points on every version.

The second line is water resistance: 30m across the line, which on this site is the rating that ends watches. It is defensible on a dress watch — this is not a watch to swim in by design — but it means a Bambino cannot be your only watch. Water resistance explained sets out what 30m actually permits.

If those two lines are what is bothering you, the answer within Orient is the AK00 Version 3: domed sapphire, 50m, 22mm standard lugs, the same in-house movement and the same three-year warranty, for a score of 8.0. You pay for it in size.

Which version fits which wrist

Orient publishes a lug-to-lug for every Bambino, which is more than Tissot, Citizen or Hamilton do on several of their dress watches — so this is one line where you can actually choose on fit rather than on hope. Version 7 is 44mm across the lugs, the Open Heart 46mm, the Small Seconds 46.5mm and Version 9 47mm.

Under about a 165mm wrist, stay with Version 7. Between 165mm and 185mm, any of the four will sit properly. Over about 185mm, Version 9 is the one that will not look small, and the AK00's 50.5mm is the only figure in Orient's range here that genuinely fills a large wrist. Best watches for small wrists and large wrists rank the whole site on the same measurement.

What a Bambino costs to keep

Orient publishes a three-year warranty — a year longer than Tissot or Hamilton — and no US service price list, which is the brand's one real gap. The movements are in-house Orient calibers in high volume, so an independent watchmaker can quote you and parts are not an unknown; you simply cannot look the number up before you buy. That is worth 0.4 of 1.0 in our formula, the same as Citizen. What a watch costs to keep does the arithmetic against the brands that publish.

Which to buy

Version 7 for almost everyone: the smallest footprint, the thinnest of the standard-dial versions, and the only standard 20mm strap fitting in the line. The Open Heart if you want the movement visible and accept that an open dial dates. The Small Seconds if you want the quietest dial of the four and will buy it direct from Orient. Version 9 only if you will read all three of its displays and 14.2mm does not bother you.

And if the real question is whether to buy a Bambino at all, two pages answer it from different directions: the Timex Marlin against the Orient Bambino is the comparison most people arrive with, and best dress watches under $500 ranks the line against everything else at that money — including the AK00 that beats all four.

Questions people actually ask

Which Orient Bambino should I buy?

Version 7. At 38.4mm with a published 44mm lug-to-lug it is the smallest and best-proportioned of the four, and it is the only one with a standard, even 20mm lug width. The movement, warranty and crystal are the same across the line.

Do any Orient Bambinos have sapphire?

No. Every version uses a domed mineral crystal, which is the line's defining compromise and the reason none of them scores above 6.3 here. The Orient AK00 Version 3 is the same brand's dress automatic with domed sapphire and 50m, and it scores 8.0.

What is the difference between Bambino Version 7 and Version 9?

Size and dial. Version 7 is 38.4mm with a 44mm lug-to-lug, 12.5mm thick and 20mm lugs. Version 9 is 41.5mm with a 47mm lug-to-lug, 14.2mm thick and 21mm lugs, and adds a weekday and a 24-hour sub-register. The extra height is what those displays cost.

Which Bambino is thinnest?

The Open Heart and the Small Seconds, both at 12mm, with Version 7 at 12.5mm. Version 9 is the outlier at 14.2mm.

Can you swim with an Orient Bambino?

No. All four are rated 30m, which covers rain and handwashing. It is a dress watch and the rating reflects that.

What does an Orient service cost?

Orient publishes no US service price list, which is the brand's main gap against Seiko. The movements are in-house calibers made in volume, so an independent watchmaker can quote you — but you cannot price it before buying.

Is the Bambino Small Seconds on Amazon?

Not currently. Orient sells that reference through its own store, so our link goes to Orient Watch USA and earns us nothing. The other three versions have live Amazon listings.
