38mm watches

Best 38mm watches

38mm is the size field watches were built to, and the size that suits the widest range of wrists. These are the ones worth buying, with the measurement that actually decides fit.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38 is the best 38mm watch here: sapphire, 100m, an 80-hour automatic and a 47mm lug-to-lug. The hand-wound Khaki Field Mechanical is the thinnest at 9.5mm, and the BOLDR Venture fits titanium and 200m into a 44mm lug-to-lug.

38mm is the classic size for a field watch — issued watches were kept small so they would not catch on anything, as the field vs pilot comparison explains. It sits comfortably on a wide range of wrists, slides under a cuff when the case is thin, and never looks like it is trying too hard.

Diameter is only half the fit. Two 38mm watches can differ by several millimeters lug to lug, and that is what decides whether a watch overhangs your wrist. Every pick below prints both.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Diameter

38mm to 38.4mm. Watches at 39mm have their own page.

  2. 02Lug-to-lug

Printed on every pick where the maker publishes it. It decides fit more than diameter does.

  3. 03Crystal and water

Sapphire and 100m or more score highest, and we say so when a watch has neither.

  4. 04Movement and warranty

Scored like everything else here: a caliber you can service, and a warranty the maker states.

The 38mm watch the others are measured against: sapphire, 100m, an 80-hour H-10 with a Nivachron hairspring, 11mm thick and 47mm lug-to-lug.

Two years of warranty and no US service price list are the costs.

Mechanically identical to the Murph and usually cheaper, because it does not carry a film's name. 47mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is a genuinely versatile footprint.

Mechanically the Khaki Field Auto, with the Murph's dial and a folding clasp.

Hamilton does not publish its lug-to-lug.

Hamilton fits Nivachron across the Khaki Field line — an antimagnetic hairspring, addressing the failure mode that used to send affordable mechanicals to the bench. This is a watch designed around the twenty-year case.

No rotor, so 9.5mm thick — the 38mm that slides under any cuff — with sapphire and 80 hours on a wind.

Rated 50m, and it needs winding every few days.

No rotor means fewer parts and a thinner case, and the H-50 runs 80 hours on a wind. This is the simplest genuinely good mechanical watch on this site, and simple is what survives.

The NH38A is the movement every independent watchmaker already knows, which is the whole serviceability argument in one line. A 44mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is about as wearable as a 200m watch gets.

Mecha-quartz splits the difference honestly: quartz timekeeping, a mechanical chronograph reset, and a battery any shop stocks. The VK64 is a module — when it dies it is replaced, not rebuilt.

The Bambino at the size it should always have been: 38.4mm, 44mm lug-to-lug, an in-house hacking automatic and three years of warranty.

Domed mineral glass and 30m make it a dress watch only.

A 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small by modern standards, and this is the Bambino to buy if the 40.5mm versions never sat right. The domed mineral crystal is the compromise, and it is the one Orient never fixes on this line.

The Weekender is one of the best-known 38mm watches there is, and one of the most often recommended to people who ask for a small watch.

It is a brass case rated 30m on a CR2016 battery, and Timex's one-year warranty excludes the crystal, strap, case and battery. Every watch above it on this page is built to last longer.

At almost the same size and the same simplicity, the [Citizen Chandler](/styles/field-watches/best-solar) is 37mm, light-powered, 100m and covered for five years.

A brass case at 30m, with a warranty that excludes the crystal, the strap, the case and the battery — which is to say almost everything that fails. Buy it as a strap-swapping toy, not as a watch to keep.

Is 38mm too small?

Not for most wrists. The Khaki Field's 47mm lug-to-lug covers more of your wrist than the 40mm Seiko SPB453, whose lug-to-lug is 46.4mm. If 38mm still looks small on you, the 40mm watches and the large-wrist picks are the next step.

Questions people actually ask

Is 38mm a good watch size?

For most wrists, yes. It is the classic field-watch size, it slides under a cuff when the case is thin, and it rarely overhangs. Check the lug-to-lug: 44mm to 47mm on the picks here.

Is a 38mm watch too small for a man?

Not by any measure but fashion. Hamilton's Khaki Field, one of the best-known field watches, is 38mm. For a large wrist, see the large-wrist picks.

What is the best 38mm automatic?

The Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38: sapphire, 100m and an 80-hour movement with an antimagnetic hairspring.

38mm or 40mm?

38mm for a smaller wrist, under a cuff, or a vintage proportion; 40mm if 38mm looks small on you. Lug-to-lug matters more than either number.
