40mm watches

Best 40mm watches

40mm is the most common case size on this site, from 300m divers to dress watches. That makes it the size where a ranking matters most.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Seiko Prospex SPB453 is the best 40mm watch here: 300m, sapphire, 72 hours and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug. The Seiko Presage SPB471 is the dress-dial alternative at 40.2mm, and the Tissot PRX is the 40mm integrated-bracelet watch, at 10.93mm thick.

40mm is the most common case size on this site, which makes it the most crowded size to shop and the one where a ranking is most useful. Divers, dress watches, a field watch and an integrated-bracelet sports watch all compete here on the same six specifications.

It is also the size where lug-to-lug varies most. The Hamilton Jazzmaster Skeleton is 40mm with a 42mm lug-to-lug; the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time is 40.5mm with 47.5mm. On a small wrist those are different watches.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Diameter

    40mm to 40.5mm.

  2. 02Lug-to-lug

42mm to 48mm where published. Several makers here do not publish it, and we print that.

  3. 03Crystal and water

Sapphire and 100m or more score highest; we print it when a watch has neither.

  4. 04Movement and warranty

A caliber you can service and a warranty the maker states.

A 300m diver's watch in a 40mm case with a 46.4mm lug-to-lug, sapphire and a 72-hour 6R55 with a published accuracy tolerance.

13mm thick. Seiko's warranty is three years, and the published $296 6R overhaul is the running cost.

300m and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug in the same watch is unusual. The extender in the clasp is the detail that says Seiko still expects this one to be dived, not just worn.

The Presage with a Prospex specification: sapphire, 100m, a 72-hour 6R5J and a published +25/-15 seconds a day, at 40.2mm and 46mm lug-to-lug.

13mm thick — dressy rather than a dress watch.

This is the Presage with the Prospex specification sheet: dual-curved sapphire, 100m, 72 hours and a published +25 to -15 seconds a day, on the 6R family's published $296 service path. It is 13mm thick, which is the price of all that on a dress watch.

Sapphire, 100m and 80 hours at 40mm and 11.5mm, on a bracelet that comes off without a tool.

Tissot does not publish its lug-to-lug, and the lug width is 21mm.

The quick-release bracelet is the detail worth paying for: this is one of the few Swiss automatics at this level you can re-strap in thirty seconds without a tool.

A 42mm lug-to-lug is the shortest on this page by a distance — a 40mm watch that sits on less wrist than the 38mm Khaki Field.

It is a skeleton, rated 50m, on an 80-hour H-10-S.

42mm lug-to-lug on a 40mm case is remarkable — this is a skeleton watch that actually fits a normal wrist. 50m is the honest limit: an open dial is still a sealed case, but it is not a watch to swim in.

Under 11mm with sapphire, 100m and an 80-hour Powermatic 80, backed by Tissot's published $210 service price.

The 12mm bracelet fitting is not a strap size, and Tissot does not publish the lug-to-lug.

Tissot publishes a US complete-service price of $210 for a mechanical two-or-three-hand watch, which makes this the most predictable Swiss automatic here to own. The 12mm lug width is not a strap size — the bracelet is part of the case.

The Bambino Small Seconds has a properly integrated small-seconds movement — Orient's F6222 — and a sensible 46.5mm lug-to-lug.

It pairs a domed mineral crystal with 30m and an odd 21mm lug width. Every other watch on this page has sapphire or Hardlex and at least 50m.

If you want a Bambino, the [38.4mm Version 7](/guides/best-38mm-watches) is the one to buy.

Small seconds at this price normally means a module bolted onto a center-seconds movement. Orient's F6222 does it properly. The 21mm lug width is the tax you pay at strap-buying time.

Is 40mm too big?

Rarely, if the lug-to-lug is right. Every watch on this page with a published lug-to-lug is between 42mm and 48mm, a range that overlaps both the 38mm and 39mm pages. To go up a size, the 41mm and 42mm pages are next.

Questions people actually ask

Is 40mm a good watch size?

For most wrists, yes, provided the lug-to-lug is sensible. Every watch here with a published figure is between 42mm and 48mm.

What is the best 40mm dive watch?

The Seiko Prospex SPB453: 300m, sapphire and a 72-hour movement in a 40mm case with a 46.4mm lug-to-lug.

What is the best 40mm dress watch?

For a watch you would wear with a suit, the Tissot PRX at 10.93mm or the Hamilton Jazzmaster Skeleton with its 42mm lug-to-lug. The Seiko Presage SPB471 scores higher, but at 13mm it is dressy rather than a dress watch.

40mm or 42mm?

40mm unless your wrist is large or you want a tool watch's presence. Compare lug-to-lug — the 42mm page prints it for each watch.
