The Prospex SPB453 is the best Prospex here: 300m, sapphire, a 72-hour 6R55 and a published $296 overhaul. The Alpinist SPB317 is the friendlier 200m case, and the Turtle SRPE93 is the cheapest certified diver to keep — a $176 published 4R overhaul.

Prospex is where Seiko builds its professional sport watches, and its divers are the most affordable certified dive watches there are: Seiko may only print "diver's" on a dial if the watch meets ISO 6425. Every Prospex diver below carries that marking and a three-year warranty, and Seiko publishes what each costs to service.

The decision inside the line is the caliber. The 4R against 6R comparison sets it out in full; in short, the 6R buys sapphire, 30 more hours and a published accuracy tolerance for $120 more per overhaul.

300m in a 40mm case at 46.4mm lug-to-lug, with a 72-hour 6R55, sapphire and a published tolerance of +25 to -15 seconds a day.

The published $296 overhaul makes it the most capable dive watch whose twenty-year cost you can compute.

300m and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug in the same watch is unusual. The extender in the clasp is the detail that says Seiko still expects this one to be dived, not just worn.

At 41mm and 12.3mm thick, the Alpinist wears like a field watch while carrying the ISO diver's marking — which is why it tops several lists on this site.

Same 6R service price. If 300m is more than you will ever use, this is the one.

This is where Seiko starts publishing an accuracy figure (+25/-15 seconds a day) and fits sapphire. A 6R35 overhaul is $296 against $176 for a 4R36 — a real difference, and one you can plan for.

The Turtle is the entry to Prospex and the cheapest ISO-marked diver there is to own over twenty years, at a published $176 per overhaul.

Hardlex and 41 hours are the trade; a sapphire replacement at service is the usual fix.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

The Speedtimer SSC947 is an excellent watch, with sapphire, a V192 solar chronograph at a published ±15 seconds a month and Seiko's $163 V-series service price.

On a page about the Prospex line for keeping, it is the one to understand first: a solar module you replace rather than rebuild, a 21mm lug width that makes every strap harder to find, and 100m without a diver's marking. The mechanical Prospex divers above can be kept running indefinitely.

Seiko lists V-series solar service at $163 — cheaper than a 4R36 overhaul and far cheaper than a mechanical chronograph. The 21mm lug width is the annoyance: standard straps come in 20 and 22.

What "diver's" on the dial means

ISO 6425 is a harder regime than the general water-resistance standard, adding tests for condensation, thermal shock and operation while submerged. Seiko may only print "diver's" if the watch qualifies — which is why the marking on a Prospex diver is a genuine signal, and why its absence on the Seiko 5 matters.
