Citizen Promaster vs Seiko Prospex

The 6R tier is where Prospex stops trading against Citizen and simply wins on specification: sapphire, a 70-hour 6R35, a published accuracy tolerance of +25 to -15 seconds a day and a 41mm case at 46.9mm lug-to-lug.

You pay for it twice — once to buy, and $296 every three years or so to keep. That second number is the reason the Citizen below exists.

This is where Seiko starts publishing an accuracy figure (+25/-15 seconds a day) and fits sapphire. A 6R35 overhaul is $296 against $176 for a 4R36 — a real difference, and one you can plan for.

300m rather than 200m, in a smaller case than the SPB317 — 40mm across, 46.4mm lug-to-lug, 13mm thick — with a 72-hour 6R55 and sapphire.

300m and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug in the same watch is unusual. The extender in the clasp is the detail that says Seiko still expects this one to be dived, not just worn.

This is the direct rival to the Promaster Diver: similar money, 200m, a certified diver's rating on both. The Seiko gives you a rebuildable 4R36 and the cheapest published mechanical service in the industry; the Citizen gives you nothing to service at all.

Hardlex resists scratching better than the Citizen's mineral. Neither can be polished.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

Citizen's Super Titanium is surface-hardened, which answers titanium's one weakness, and on a 44mm diver the weight saving is the difference between wearing it all day and taking it off.

The Promaster Diver in its simplest form: 200m, a 20mm strap fitting, five years of warranty and a movement that runs on any light source, with no battery and no service interval.

Mineral on a 44mm dial is the cost. Citizen publishes no service prices, so when the module does eventually need attention, the price is a quote.

The strongest argument for this watch is the one Citizen makes on its own page: nothing to replace, five years of cover. The argument against it is the mineral crystal, which will scratch where sapphire would not.
