Is the Promaster Diver worth it?

Is the Citizen Promaster Diver worth it?

The Promaster Diver is the dive watch you never wind, never service and never change a battery in. Its one weakness is the glass over the dial.

The short answer

Yes, if you want a 200m diver with nothing to maintain: light power, ISO compliance as Citizen states it, and a five-year warranty. The catch is the mineral crystal, which scratches where sapphire would not. The Super Titanium BN0200 is the version to buy; the Orient Kamasu is the sapphire alternative.

The Promaster Diver makes the simplest argument of any watch on this site: a 200m diver that runs on light and is covered for five years, so there is nothing to maintain and very little to worry about. That argument is correct, and Citizen makes it on its own product page.

What holds its score down is the crystal. Mineral glass scratches where sapphire does not, and on a dive watch — built to be knocked about — the crystal shows it first. The picks below are the two Promaster Divers and the watches to buy instead.

The Kamasu gives you what the Promaster lacks — a sapphire crystal — with 200m, a screw-down crown and an in-house automatic, and three years of warranty.

It needs winding if it sits and servicing every few years, which the Promaster does not.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

A diver's watch on the most widely serviced mechanical caliber in the US, with a published $176 overhaul — a diver that can be rebuilt indefinitely.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

The Super Titanium Promaster: the same 200m, light power and five-year warranty in a surface-hardened titanium case — lighter, and harder to mark than plain titanium.

Mineral glass, a 22mm strap and 44mm across.

Citizen's Super Titanium is surface-hardened, which is the point — plain titanium marks more easily than steel, and this does not. It is the closest thing on this list to a watch you can stop thinking about.

The steel version: 200m, light power and five years of cover on a 20mm strap. The blue-dial BN0151 is identical in every specification Citizen publishes.

Mineral glass, and 44mm across.

The strongest argument for this watch is the one Citizen makes on its own page: nothing to replace, five years of cover. The argument against it is the mineral crystal, which will scratch where sapphire would not.

The Fleuss is the sapphire alternative people reach for: sapphire, a screw-down crown and 15 ATM, with a stated two-year warranty.

It stops short of the Promaster's 200m, it needs winding and servicing, and its 51mm lug-to-lug is the longest on this site. It fixes the Promaster's crystal and gives up almost everything else that makes the Promaster worth buying.

Sapphire, 15 ATM, a screw-down crown and a stated two-year warranty on a Miyota 8215 — a caliber every independent has seen. Then Spinnaker publishes the lug-to-lug: 51mm, the longest on this site by a clear margin.

BN0150 or BN0200?

The BN0200 if you can: the same movement and rating in Super Titanium. The BN0150 is steel on a 20mm strap, and the BN0151 is its blue-dial version.

Does the Promaster Diver need a battery?

No. It runs on Citizen's E168 Eco-Drive, charged by light. Citizen's warranty excludes the rechargeable cell, which is the part that eventually wears.

Is the Promaster Diver ISO compliant?

Citizen describes it as an ISO-compliant Promaster Professional Diver on its product page.
