Hamilton vs Citizen

Hamilton vs Citizen

Hamilton builds 80-hour mechanical field and pilot's watches; Citizen builds light-powered ones you never wind. Both have a strong claim on the same buyer.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Hamilton if you want a mechanical watch: 80-hour movements with a Nivachron hairspring, and sapphire across the Khaki line. Citizen if you want a watch you never wind: Eco-Drive, up to 200m and a five-year warranty against Hamilton's two. The Khaki Field Auto 38 and the Citizen Garrison are the closest head-to-head.

Hamilton and Citizen compete hardest in the two styles both make well: field watches and pilot's watches. The choice between them is really a choice between a mechanical watch with an 80-hour reserve and a light-powered one you never think about.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Movements

Hamilton: H-10, H-40 and H-50, all 80 hours here. Citizen: Eco-Drive solar, plus the 8210 automatic.

  2. 02Warranty

    Citizen five years; Hamilton two.

  3. 03Service

Hamilton publishes a European service list but no US one; Citizen publishes no service prices.

  4. 04Crystal

Sapphire on most Hamiltons here, mineral on the Pilot Pioneer Mechanical; sapphire on the Garrison, Tsuyosa and A-T Citizens.

  5. 05Styles

Both make field and pilot's watches; Citizen adds 200m divers.

An 80-hour H-10 with a Nivachron hairspring, sapphire and 100m in a 38mm case with a 47mm lug-to-lug.

Two years of warranty against the Garrison's five.

Mechanically identical to the Murph and usually cheaper, because it does not carry a film's name. 47mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is a genuinely versatile footprint.

Sapphire and 100m on an 80-hour H-40 with day and date — the pilot's specification most of the style skips.

Hamilton does not publish the lug-to-lug.

Hamilton fits the same Nivachron hairspring here as on the Khaki Field line, and the H-40 runs 80 hours. Sapphire and 100m on a watch this legible is the pilot-watch specification sheet most of the category never manages.

A radio-synchronized, light-powered flight computer behind sapphire and rated 200m, with five years of warranty.

45mm across, and a module rather than a movement.

It sets itself by radio, runs on light and is rated to 200m behind sapphire — and it is a module, not a movement. When the module stops being made, the watch is finished, however good the case still is.

Sapphire on a Super Titanium case with Eco-Drive and five years of warranty — the Khaki Field's closest Citizen rival.

42mm to the Khaki Field's 38mm, and Citizen publishes neither the thickness nor the lug-to-lug.

Sapphire is the upgrade the 37mm Chandler never got, on a Super Titanium case with Citizen's five years of cover. Citizen publishes neither the thickness nor the lug-to-lug, so try it on before you commit to 42mm.

Hamilton has no diver on this site; Citizen's Promaster is 200m in Super Titanium, on light power, with five years of warranty.

Mineral glass, and 44mm across.

Citizen's Super Titanium is surface-hardened, which is the point — plain titanium marks more easily than steel, and this does not. It is the closest thing on this list to a watch you can stop thinking about.

The Pilot Pioneer Mechanical is a lovely object: a 9.95mm hand-wound reissue of a 1970s RAF-issue pilot's watch, rated 100m, with 80 hours on a wind.

Hamilton fits a mineral crystal on it, as Citizen does on some of its simplest watches — but Citizen pairs that with five years of warranty and no winding. Against the Garrison's sapphire, this is the one that will show its age first.

For a Hamilton with sapphire, the Khaki Field Auto above.

Everything about this watch is right except the front of it. Hamilton fits a mineral crystal here and sapphire on the Khaki Field Mechanical at a similar level, which on a watch bought to keep is the difference between a case that ages and a face that does.

Which to buy

If you wantBuy
A mechanical watch with a long reserveHamilton — 80 hours across the range here
A watch you never wind or serviceCitizen — Eco-Drive, five years
A dive watchCitizen — the 200m Promaster
The smaller field watchHamilton Khaki Field Auto 38

Each brand on its own: Hamilton and Citizen. The two styles head to head: field watch vs pilot watch.

Questions people actually ask

Is Hamilton better than Citizen?

For a mechanical watch, Hamilton: 80-hour movements with an antimagnetic hairspring and sapphire across the Khaki line. For a watch that needs nothing, Citizen: light power and five years of warranty against two.

Hamilton Khaki Field or Citizen Garrison?

The Khaki Field Auto 38 for a smaller, mechanical watch; the Garrison for solar power, Super Titanium and five years of warranty at 42mm.

Which has the better warranty?

Citizen, at five years against Hamilton's two.

Which is cheaper to service?

Citizen's Eco-Drive needs little servicing. Hamilton publishes a European service price list but no US one, so a US Hamilton service is quoted.
