The short answer

Buy Hamilton for the movement: 80 hours of reserve and a Nivachron antimagnetic balance spring on an ETA base any watchmaker can service. Buy Orient for value: in-house calibers that hack and hand-wind, sapphire at prices where Seiko fits Hardlex, and a three-year warranty. Orient's weakness is that it publishes no service price at all.

These two rarely sit in the same shopping basket, because Hamilton generally starts where Orient stops. But they get compared constantly by people deciding whether to spend once or spend less — and the honest answer depends on which specification you are actually buying.

Hamilton is a Swiss brand inside the Swatch Group, which means ETA movements, an established service network and the pricing that comes with both. Orient is owned by Seiko Epson and builds its own calibers, which is how it puts an in-house hacking automatic under sapphire at a price the Swiss cannot approach.

41.8mm with a published 46.8mm lug-to-lug and 12.8mm thick, on a 22mm strap width, with a three-year warranty.

40 hours of reserve, no published antimagnetic spec, and no US service price list.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

80 hours of reserve means it survives a weekend off the wrist, and the Nivachron balance spring handles the magnets that now live in every laptop and phone case.

Sapphire, 100m, 38mm with a published 47mm lug-to-lug and a 20mm strap width — the proportions the field style was built around.

Two years of warranty against Orient's three, and Hamilton publishes only a European service price.

Mechanically identical to the Murph and usually cheaper, because it does not carry a film's name. 47mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is a genuinely versatile footprint.

A 42mm pilot's watch on an 80-hour H-40 with Nivachron, sapphire and 100m, at 11.85mm thick.

Hamilton publishes no lug-to-lug for it, which on a 42mm case is a real omission.

Hamilton fits the same Nivachron hairspring here as on the Khaki Field line, and the H-40 runs 80 hours. Sapphire and 100m on a watch this legible is the pilot-watch specification sheet most of the category never manages.

9.5mm because there is no rotor, with the same 80-hour reserve and sapphire — the thinnest field watch on this site.

50m rather than 100m, and it needs winding every day or two.

No rotor means fewer parts and a thinner case, and the H-50 runs 80 hours on a wind. This is the simplest genuinely good mechanical watch on this site, and simple is what survives.

An in-house hacking, hand-winding automatic under domed sapphire with a day, date and 24-hour register, for a fraction of any Hamilton here.

42.5mm and 14mm thick with a 50.5mm lug-to-lug — a large watch that will overhang a narrow wrist.

Domed sapphire at this price is unusual and it is why this one is here. The 50.5mm lug-to-lug is not — that is a big watch, whatever the 42.5mm on the spec sheet suggests.

The Bambino line is what most people picture when they hear Orient, and Version 9 is the one that shows the brand's weak end.

14.2mm thick on a watch rated 30m with a mineral crystal that cannot be polished back, and a 21mm lug width that narrows every strap purchase.

The Kamasu and the AK00 above are the Orients worth buying, and both cost about the same.

At 14.2mm this is the thickest Bambino here, which is what a day-date-24h module costs you in height. Worth it only if you will actually read all three.

The 80-hour argument

This is the clearest thing Hamilton sells that Orient does not. An 80-hour reserve means a watch put down on Friday is still running Monday morning; a 40-hour one is dead by Saturday night. If the watch will be one of two or three you rotate, that is the difference between wearing it and resetting it.

If it will be your only watch, worn daily, it matters far less — a watch on your wrist stays wound either way.

The in-house argument

Orient builds its own calibers, which at these prices is genuinely unusual. The F6922 in the Kamasu hacks and hand-winds — both features the cheap Seiko 7S movements famously lacked — and it sits under a sapphire crystal in a 200m case with a screw-down crown.

Being in-house cuts both ways. It is real engineering rather than a rebadged ETA, and it also means parts come from exactly one company. With no published service price, an Orient overhaul is a quote — which is the single biggest mark against the brand on this site.

Which to buy

If the budget reaches Hamilton comfortably and the watch will be worn in rotation, buy the Hamilton: 80 hours, Nivachron and an ETA base any independent can service. If you want the most watch for the money and will wear it most days, the Kamasu beats everything near its price on specification and has a longer warranty than either Swiss brand here.
