The Alpinist SPB317 ties for the highest Keep Score on this site, and the reason is not one outstanding number but the absence of a weak one: sapphire, 200m, a named 6R35 with a published accuracy tolerance, a standard 20mm lug width, three years of warranty and a published service price.

The Kamasu matches the Alpinist on sapphire, 200m and a three-year warranty, around an in-house hacking automatic, one tier down.

No published accuracy figure and no US service price list — and it is a diver rather than a field watch.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

Hardlex, 41 hours and a 48.1mm lug-to-lug — the gap between this and the Alpinist is exactly what the 6R step buys.

The 39.4mm case reads small, but the 48.1mm lug-to-lug does not — this wears longer than its diameter suggests. Measure your wrist before you buy on the diameter alone.

On paper the North Titanium is the Alpinist's specification in titanium, one tier down: sapphire, 200m and an automatic.

The difference is everything behind the case. Timex does not name the caliber, publishes no accuracy figure or service price, and warrants it for one year with exclusions, and its 50mm lug-to-lug wears longer than the Alpinist's 46.9mm.

For a cheaper route to the Alpinist's kind of paperwork, the Kamasu or the SRPG39 above.

65 grams, sapphire and 200m is a spec sheet Timex has no business hitting. The one-year warranty is the reason to think about it: everything else here is covered for two to five.
