Is the Le Locle worth it?

Is the Tissot Le Locle worth it?

The thinnest Swiss automatic this site covers, with the longest reserve and a published service price. It is also rated 30m, and that is not a detail.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Yes, as a dress watch and only as a dress watch. At 9.75mm it is the thinnest automatic here, the Powermatic 80 runs 80 hours with a Nivachron balance spring, and Tissot publishes $210 to service it with 24 months of warranty on the work. The 30m rating means it is not an only watch.

The Le Locle is Tissot's traditional dress automatic and it has been quietly good for a long time. It is named after the town the company has been in since 1853, it uses the Powermatic 80 with a Nivachron balance spring, and at 9.75mm it is thinner than anything else with a rotor on this site.

It is also rated 30m, which is the category norm for a thin dress watch and still catches people out. This page is about whether the thinness is worth what it costs you in capability.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Thickness

9.75mm — the thinnest automatic on this site, and the reason it works under a cuff.

  2. 02Reserve

80 hours on the Powermatic 80, so it survives a weekend off the wrist.

  3. 03Water resistance

30m. Rain and hand-washing; nothing else.

  4. 04Cost to keep

$210 published, with 24 months of warranty on the work — the clearest figure any Swiss brand here publishes.

  5. 05Strap standard

19mm, an odd width that narrows every future strap purchase.

100m, a published +25/-15 second daily tolerance and a three-year warranty, with a published $296 overhaul.

13mm thick, so it is a dress watch by dial rather than by profile.

This is the Presage with the Prospex specification sheet: dual-curved sapphire, 100m, 72 hours and a published +25 to -15 seconds a day, on the 6R family's published $296 service path. It is 13mm thick, which is the price of all that on a dress watch.

The same Powermatic-family movement and Nivachron spring with 100m instead of 30m, which makes it a watch you can wear without thinking about rain or a sink.

1.75mm thicker, and the open-heart aperture is dial decoration the Le Locle does without.

The quick-release bracelet is the detail worth paying for: this is one of the few Swiss automatics at this level you can re-strap in thirty seconds without a tool.

100m and sapphire at 10.93mm, with the same published $210 service price — the more practical Tissot by a distance.

The integrated bracelet takes a 12mm interlug fitting rather than a standard strap, so you keep the bracelet it came with.

Tissot publishes a US complete-service price of $210 for a mechanical two-or-three-hand watch, which makes this the most predictable Swiss automatic here to own. The 12mm lug width is not a strap size — the bracelet is part of the case.

9.75mm is what makes this watch work: it goes under a buttoned cuff without catching, which is the single job a dress watch exists to do and which most automatics fail.

The Powermatic 80 runs 80 hours with a Nivachron balance spring, and Tissot publishes $210 for a complete service with 24 months of warranty on the work — the clearest cost-to-keep statement of any Swiss brand we cover.

30m rating and a 19mm lug width are the two real costs. 30m means rain and hand-washing only; 19mm is an odd strap size that narrows every future purchase.

Under 10mm thick with 80 hours of reserve is the combination that makes a dress watch practical — put it down on Friday and it is still running Monday. 30m means keep it off in the shower.

The cheapest way into a proper dress automatic: an in-house hacking, hand-winding Orient at 38.4mm with a 44mm lug-to-lug.

A mineral crystal that cannot be polished back, and the same 30m limitation.

A 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small by modern standards, and this is the Bambino to buy if the 40.5mm versions never sat right. The domed mineral crystal is the compromise, and it is the one Orient never fixes on this line.

The Bambino Version 9 is the watch people cross-shop when the Le Locle feels expensive, and on a dress-watch page it is the wrong trade.

14.2mm thick against the Le Locle's 9.75mm, on a watch that is also rated 30m and fitted with a mineral crystal — you keep all of the Le Locle's limitations and lose the one thing it does best.

If the budget is the issue, Bambino Version 7 at 12.5mm is the sensible one.

At 14.2mm this is the thickest Bambino here, which is what a day-date-24h module costs you in height. Worth it only if you will actually read all three.

Why 9.75mm is the whole argument

An automatic carries a weighted rotor spinning over the movement, and that rotor is why most automatics sit between 11mm and 14mm. A dress watch has to disappear under a shirt cuff; every millimeter above about 11mm makes that less likely. At 9.75mm the Le Locle simply does not catch.

Our automatic dress watches page ranks the category on movement and lists the thicknesses side by side. The Le Locle is at the thin end of it, and nothing with a rotor on this site is thinner.

30m is the price you pay

A thin case has less room for gaskets and a shallower crystal seating, which is why almost every thin dress watch is rated 30m or 50m. 30m means rain and hand-washing. It does not mean swimming, and it does not mean a hot shower, where steam and thermal cycling are harder on seals than immersion.

If this is going to be your only watch, that is a genuine problem and the PRX or the Gentleman above are the answers. Water resistance explained covers what each rating actually permits.

The $210 that makes it keepable

Tissot publishes $210 for a complete service of a mechanical two- or three-hand watch and warrants the work for 24 months. That is the second-clearest service statement of any brand on this site after Seiko, and it is the reason Tissot scores as well as it does here despite two-year warranties.

Knowing the number before you buy is what separates a watch you keep from a watch you replace. The cost of ownership page does the thirty-year arithmetic.

The 19mm problem

19mm is an odd lug width, and odd widths are the quiet tax on a watch you keep: every strap you ever buy comes from a smaller pool. The Le Locle is one of two watches on this site with 19mm lugs. Barton's Alligator Grain line is the leather strap we found that covers it — see the leather strap roundup.

Questions people actually ask

Is the Tissot Le Locle worth it?

As a dress watch, yes: 9.75mm thick, an 80-hour Powermatic 80 with a Nivachron balance spring, sapphire, and a published $210 service price. The 30m rating means it should not be your only watch.

Can you swim with a Tissot Le Locle?

No. It is rated 30m, which covers rain and hand-washing. For a Tissot you can swim in, the PRX and the Gentleman are both rated 100m.

How much does a Tissot service cost?

Tissot publishes $210 for a complete service of a mechanical two- or three-hand watch, with 24 months of warranty on the work.

What strap size does the Le Locle take?

19mm, which is an odd width and harder to buy for than 20mm. Barton's Alligator Grain leather line is made in 19mm.
