For a dress watch, the Tissot Le Locle: 9.75mm thick, sapphire, and an 80-hour Powermatic 80 that survives a weekend off the wrist. The Seiko Presage SPB471 is the tougher watch — 100m, 72 hours and a published accuracy tolerance — but it is 13mm thick. The Cocktail Time is the Presage we would skip here.

The Le Locle and the Presage are the two dress automatics most buyers weigh at this level, and they are built on opposite priorities. Tissot made the Le Locle thin — under 10mm with an 80-hour movement — and accepted a 30m rating to get there. Seiko built its best Presage like a Prospex, with sapphire, 100m and a 72-hour movement with a published accuracy tolerance, and accepted 13mm.

The Presage built like a Prospex: dual-curved sapphire, 100m and a 72-hour 6R5J with a published +25/-15 seconds a day, under Seiko's three-year warranty.

13mm thick is the cost. It will sit on a cuff rather than slide under it, and at that point you own a very good everyday watch with a dress dial.

The Cocktail Time is the Presage most people mean, and its dial is the reason. Seiko publishes its lug-to-lug — 47.5mm — and it runs on the cheapest published overhaul there is.

Against the Le Locle it loses on the two things a dress watch most needs: sapphire under a shirt cuff, and a reserve that survives a weekend unworn — 41 hours against 80.

If the dial is the point, buy it knowing that. If thinness is the point, the Le Locle is the answer, and the Presage to set against it is the SPB471 above.
