Best watch boxes

A watch box has two jobs: keep your watches from touching each other, and keep dust and knocks off them. The good ones also tell you what they are made of.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Rapport London Heritage Five is the box to buy for most collections: five slots, solid burr walnut, a suede lining and a stated two-year warranty. The Brompton Five adds a lock and key, and the Vantage Eight is the size up for a collection that has outgrown five.

Watches damage each other. A steel bracelet dropped onto a polished case leaves a mark, and a drawer of loose watches is where most of those marks come from. A box with a separate cushion for each watch solves that, and a lid keeps dust off them between wears.

We looked for boxes whose maker says what they are made of and stands behind them with a stated warranty. Rapport London, whose Evo winder is on our winder page, states a two-year international warranty on every box below and describes the materials of each. It does not publish dimensions, so none are printed here.

On prices: we publish no figure we have not verified today, so every buy button reads "Check price on Amazon". The retailer's page is the authority.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Capacity

Buy for the watches you own plus one or two. Empty slots are fine; a crowded box is not.

  2. 02Lining

Suede or another soft lining against polished cases. Every box here has one.

  3. 03Cushions

Adjustable cushions can be sized to a slim strap or a thick bracelet. Two of the four state them.

  4. 04Lock

Worth having in a shared house. Two of the four have one.

  5. 05Warranty

Stated on the maker's own page. Every box here carries two years.

Rapport London Heritage Five Watch Box

Best for: The box to buy for most collections

Watch storage

Rapport London

A five-watch solid walnut box with a suede lining.

Five is the honest size for most collections: enough for a rotation and a new arrival, not so many that the box becomes storage for watches you never wear.

Solid wood in a burr walnut finish with a suede lining, and a stated two-year international warranty. No lock is stated, which is the reason to look at the Brompton instead.

Five slots is the honest size for most collections, and a suede lining is soft against a polished case. What the money buys beyond that is a maker that states a two-year warranty on a box.

The same five-watch capacity with a lock and key, and adjustable suede cushions that can be sized to each strap or bracelet.

The exterior is crocodile-effect leather rather than wood — the choice to make if the box will be handled more than admired.

The lock is the reason to pick this over the walnut box: in a shared house or a hotel room, a key is the difference between a display box and storage.

What we would not buy

A box that does not say what it is made of, or who stands behind it. Without a stated material you cannot judge how it will age, and without a stated warranty you have no recourse when a hinge or a clasp fails.

A box much bigger than your collection. An eight- or ten-slot box holding three watches is a drawer with a lid. Buy for what you own plus one or two, and move up when it is full.

A box as travel storage. Boxes are for a dresser. For a bag, use a watch roll — that is what they are built for.

Box or winder?

A box stores watches; a winder keeps an automatic running. Most people with a small rotation need the first and not the second.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best watch box?

The Rapport London Heritage Five: five slots, solid burr walnut, a suede lining and a stated two-year warranty. If you want a lock, the Brompton Five.

How many slots should a watch box have?

The number of watches you own plus one or two. Four or five suits most people; eight when five is full.

Do I need a watch box?

If you own more than one watch, it is the simplest way to stop them scratching each other. A single watch worn every day does not need one.

Should a watch box have a lock?

Only if it lives somewhere shared. Two of the four here have one: the Brompton Five and the Vantage Eight.
