Sapphire divers

Best dive watches with sapphire crystal

A dive watch is built to take knocks, and the crystal is the part that shows them first. On this list it is sapphire or nothing.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Seiko Prospex SPB453 is the best sapphire dive watch here: 300m, a 72-hour 6R55 and a 40mm case. The Orient Kamasu is the value pick, with sapphire, 200m and an in-house automatic, and the Baltic Aquascaphe GMT adds a true GMT and a sapphire bezel at 39.5mm.

Sapphire is the one specification on a dive watch you notice every day. It resists the scratches daily wear delivers — door frames, desks, sand, the clasp of the next watch in the drawer — far better than mineral glass or Seiko's Hardlex, and on a dive watch the dial is the point. The crystal guide covers the trade in detail.

Every watch below has it. Each is then ranked on the same six specifications as everything else here, so a sapphire diver with an unstated warranty or an unnamed caliber still loses points for both.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Sapphire crystal

The entry requirement. The crystal is the most exposed surface on a dive watch.

  2. 02Water resistance

200m as the norm. The Spinnaker here is rated 18 ATM, and we say so.

  3. 03Movement

A caliber with a published service price, or one any independent watchmaker can service.

  4. 04Warranty

Stated on the maker's own page, or we print that it is not.

  5. 05Fit

Lug-to-lug where the maker publishes it: from 44mm to 50mm on this page.

The deepest rating on this site in one of its smallest dive cases: 300m, sapphire and a 72-hour 6R55 with a published +25/-15 seconds a day, at 40mm and 46.4mm lug-to-lug.

Seiko's three-year warranty and a published $296 overhaul make it the most plannable dive watch here to own.

300m and a 46.4mm lug-to-lug in the same watch is unusual. The extender in the clasp is the detail that says Seiko still expects this one to be dived, not just worn.

Sapphire at a level where Seiko still fits Hardlex, with 200m, a screw-down crown and Orient's in-house F6922 — hand-winding and hacking — plus a three-year warranty.

41.8mm and 46.8mm lug-to-lug, on a 22mm strap.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

Sapphire, a screw-lock crown and 18 ATM, with a two-year international warranty stated on Spinnaker's own page.

15mm thick and 50mm across the lugs, and Spinnaker does not name the caliber. Check it against your wrist before you buy.

Sapphire and a stated two-year warranty at this price is a good trade. 15mm thick and 50mm across the lugs is not — this is a big watch, and the spec sheet says so plainly.

The Turtle is a genuine diver's watch on the cheapest published service path there is, and on most lists it would be first.

It has a Hardlex crystal — Seiko's own hardened mineral glass — over a wide cushion-case dial. If you are reading this page, sapphire is the specification you have decided to pay for, and the Kamasu above gives it to you with 200m and a three-year warranty.

If sapphire is not the point, the Turtle is ranked on its merits in the [dive watches under $500](/styles/dive-watches/best-under-500).

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

A sapphire bezel, too

Both Baltics fit a sapphire bezel insert as well as a sapphire crystal. The bezel is the part of a dive watch that takes the most knocks, and an aluminum insert fades and scratches over the years. On a watch bought to keep, that is a detail worth paying for.

Questions people actually ask

Do all dive watches have sapphire crystals?

No. The Seiko Turtle and the Seiko 5 Sports use Hardlex, and Citizen's Promaster Divers use mineral glass. Every watch on this page uses sapphire.

Is sapphire worth it on a dive watch?

Yes, if you wear it daily. Sapphire resists the scratches of everyday wear far better than mineral glass, and a dive watch's dial is the point of it. The crystal guide explains the trade.

Which sapphire dive watch suits a small wrist?

The BOLDR Venture — 38mm and 44mm lug-to-lug with 200m. The Baltic Aquascaphe, at 39mm and 47mm, is the next size up.

Does sapphire make a watch more water resistant?

No. Water resistance comes from the case, the gaskets and the crown. Sapphire changes how well the crystal resists scratching, and nothing else.
