Field watches under $500

Best field watches under $500

The step above the entry tier is where field watches get sapphire, titanium and 200m. These five make the step worth taking.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Timex Expedition North Titanium scores highest in this tier: titanium, sapphire, 200m and an automatic. The Seiko SSK023 adds a GMT on Seiko's published $176 overhaul, and the Citizen Garrison is the one you never wind, with sapphire, Super Titanium and five years of warranty.

The under-$300 field watches on this site are good watches with one recurring compromise: mineral glass or Hardlex. The next tier up is where sapphire becomes normal, and where titanium and 200m ratings start to appear on watches still meant to be worn every day.

The five below are the field watches in our under-$500 tier, ranked on the same six specifications as everything else here.

On prices: we publish no figure we have not verified today, so every buy button reads "Check price on Amazon". Service prices quoted here are the manufacturers' own published figures.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Crystal

Sapphire on four of the five picks — the main thing this tier buys over the one below.

  2. 02Case

Titanium on three of the five: the Timex, the Citizen's Super Titanium and the BOLDR.

  3. 03Water resistance

    100m to 200m.

  4. 04Warranty

From Timex's one year to Citizen's five; BOLDR states none.

  5. 05Tier

Our under-$500 tier. For less, see the field watches under $300.

Titanium, sapphire and 200m on an automatic — a specification that usually sits a tier higher.

A 50mm lug-to-lug on a 41mm case, an unnamed caliber and a one-year warranty with exclusions.

65 grams, sapphire and 200m is a spec sheet Timex has no business hitting. The one-year warranty is the reason to think about it: everything else here is covered for two to five.

A 39.4mm field case with a 24-hour hand on the 4R34, and the published $176 4R overhaul behind it, with three years of warranty.

Hardlex rather than sapphire — the one pick here without it.

Identical movement and identical service cost to the SSK001 in a case 3mm narrower. If the 42.5mm SSK001 is too much watch, this is the same purchase in a size more wrists can carry.

Sapphire on a Super Titanium case, light-powered, with Citizen's five-year warranty — the lowest-maintenance field watch in this tier.

42mm, and Citizen publishes neither the thickness nor the lug-to-lug.

Sapphire is the upgrade the 37mm Chandler never got, on a Super Titanium case with Citizen's five years of cover. Citizen publishes neither the thickness nor the lug-to-lug, so try it on before you commit to 42mm.

38mm of titanium with a 44mm lug-to-lug, sapphire and 200m on the NH38A — the field watch in this tier for a smaller wrist.

The NH38A is the movement every independent watchmaker already knows, which is the whole serviceability argument in one line. A 44mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is about as wearable as a 200m watch gets.

The Field Medic II is a good chronograph, and it is ranked that way on the [small-wrist chronographs page](/styles/chronograph-watches/best-for-small-wrists).

As a field watch to keep for decades, it asks you to accept a VK64 module that is replaced rather than rebuilt, and BOLDR states no warranty term. The Venture above is the same 38mm titanium case idea around a serviceable automatic.

Mecha-quartz splits the difference honestly: quartz timekeeping, a mechanical chronograph reset, and a battery any shop stocks. The VK64 is a module — when it dies it is replaced, not rebuilt.

What the extra tier buys

Mostly sapphire and, on three of these, titanium. What it does not buy is a lower running cost: the SSK023's published $176 overhaul is the same one the under-$300 Seiko 5 field watch carries, and Timex does not publish its caliber at all. The field watch hub covers the style from the top.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best field watch under $500?

The Timex Expedition North Titanium on specification — titanium, sapphire, 200m — or the Citizen Garrison if you want solar power and a five-year warranty.

Is a titanium field watch worth it?

On a watch worn daily, usually: titanium is lighter than steel at the same size. The titanium vs stainless steel guide covers the trade.

Do field watches need sapphire?

They benefit more than most, because they are worn outdoors. Four of the five here have it; the Seiko SSK023 uses Hardlex.

Automatic or solar for a field watch?

Automatic if you want a watch a watchmaker can rebuild; solar if you never want to think about it. The solar field watches page ranks the second kind.
