Garrison vs Field Post

Citizen Garrison vs Timex Expedition Field Post Solar

Both run on light, both have sapphire, both are rated 100m. One is titanium and covered for five years. The other tells you how big it is.

The short answer

Buy the Garrison if you want the watch to outlast you: Super Titanium, sapphire, 100m and five years of cover score 7.2 against the Timex's 6.6. Buy the Field Post Solar if you have a small wrist or want to change straps — it is 36mm with a published 44.5mm lug-to-lug and standard 18mm lugs, where Citizen publishes no dimensions for the Garrison at all.

Super Titanium, sapphire, 100m, 42mm, Citizen E101 Eco-Drive, five years.

Super Titanium is the reason to choose it. It is lighter than steel and surface-hardened so it resists the scratching that makes ordinary titanium look tired, and on a watch meant to be worn every day for decades that compounds.

Full write-up and the measured specifications are further down this page.

Light-powered field watches with sapphire are a small category, and these are the two worth knowing about. Neither needs a battery, neither needs winding, both have the crystal you want and both are rated for swimming.

They differ on material, on size, and on how much the maker is prepared to tell you. Citizen gives you titanium and five years of cover. Timex gives you a watch you can measure before it arrives.

The scoring gap is 0.6, which is narrow, and it hides a trade that is not narrow at all: the Garrison wins the warranty line by more than a point and loses the strap line by nearly as much, because Citizen will not publish a band width.

On prices: every buy button on this page reads its figure from the live price layer and stamps the date it was checked, or else reads "Check price on Amazon". No price is written into this text. Service figures quoted here are the manufacturers' own published rates.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Case material

Super Titanium against IP-black stainless steel. Citizen's titanium is surface-hardened, which is the point — plain titanium marks more easily than steel, and this does not.

  2. 02Published dimensions

Timex publishes 36mm, 44.5mm lug-to-lug, 12mm thick, 18mm lugs. Citizen publishes a 42mm case and nothing else — not the thickness, not the lug-to-lug, not even the band width.

  3. 03Warranty term

Five years against one. Timex's one year excludes the crystal, strap, case and battery.

  4. 04Fit

42mm of unknown proportions against a 36mm watch whose every figure is on the page.

  5. 05What is identical

A light-powered movement with no battery to change, a sapphire crystal, a 100m rating, and both on Amazon today.

Super Titanium is the reason to choose it. It is lighter than steel and surface-hardened so it resists the scratching that makes ordinary titanium look tired, and on a watch meant to be worn every day for decades that compounds.

Five years of cover against one is a wide margin, even allowing that Citizen's excludes the power cell, case, bracelet and strap. Sapphire and 100m match the Timex exactly.

The problem is what is missing. Citizen publishes no thickness, no lug-to-lug and no band width for this reference — three absences on one product page. You cannot predict the fit, and you cannot order a strap for it without measuring the watch yourself.

Sapphire is the upgrade the 37mm Chandler never got, on a Super Titanium case with Citizen's five years of cover. Citizen publishes neither the thickness, the lug-to-lug nor the band width for this reference, so try it on before you commit to 42mm.

36mm with a 44.5mm lug-to-lug and 12mm of thickness is properly small, and all three figures come from Timex rather than from a reviewer with calipers. On a small wrist this is one of the few genuinely good answers.

18mm standard lugs suit the proportions and mean straps are cheap and permanent. A 20mm strap on a 36mm case looks wrong; this avoids it.

The one-year warranty excluding the crystal, strap, case and battery is the weak point and the reason it finishes behind the Garrison. Steel with an IP black coating is also less durable than Super Titanium over twenty years.

The smallest genuinely good watch here. Sapphire, solar, 100m and 44.5mm across the lugs — if you have a small wrist and want to stop thinking about batteries, start here.

It fails this page because it is not light-powered — it is the thing both watches above are designed to spare you.

It is here because it is the highest-scoring field watch on this site at 8.6, and because at 38mm and 11mm thick it splits the difference in size between the two solar watches.

Our Khaki Field Auto against the Timex Expedition Pioneer page covers the mechanical side of this decision.

Mechanically identical to the Murph and usually cheaper, because it does not carry a film's name. 47mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is a genuinely versatile footprint.

Three numbers Citizen does not print

Thickness, lug-to-lug and band width are the three figures that decide whether a watch fits you and whether you can put a strap on it. Citizen publishes none of them for the Garrison, which is a recurring frustration with the brand rather than a one-off.

It costs the watch most of a point on our strap standardization line, because an unpublished band width means you are measuring the lugs yourself before you can buy anything. Our watch straps guide covers how to measure, and Garrison versus the Timex Expedition North Titanium sets the two titanium grades against each other.

What Super Titanium is actually worth

Plain titanium is lighter than steel and scratches more easily, which is why some titanium watches look worn out in two years. Citizen's Super Titanium is surface-hardened to resist exactly that, and it is the single strongest argument for the Garrison over anything steel at this money.

Our titanium versus stainless steel guide covers the trade in full, including where titanium is the wrong answer.

Size decides this for a lot of people

42mm of unknown thickness and unknown lug-to-lug against a 36mm watch published at 44.5mm across the lugs is not a subtle difference. If your wrist is under about 165mm, the Timex is the safe choice and the Garrison is a gamble you cannot price before it arrives.

Above that, the Garrison is the better object. Best solar watches ranks both against the wider light-powered field.

Which to buy

The Garrison, if 42mm works on you and you are willing to measure the lugs yourself. Super Titanium and five years of cover is the combination that makes a watch you stop maintaining and keep wearing.

The Field Post Solar if your wrist is small, or if you want to know exactly what is arriving. It is the more predictable purchase and the easier watch to live with, and it gives up titanium and four years of warranty to be so.

Questions people actually ask

Citizen Garrison or Timex Field Post Solar — which is better?

The Garrison on specification: Super Titanium, sapphire, 100m and five years of cover score 7.2 against 6.6. The Timex wins if you have a small wrist or want published dimensions, because it is 36mm with a 44.5mm lug-to-lug and 18mm standard lugs, and Citizen publishes no thickness, lug-to-lug or band width for the Garrison.

What size is the Citizen Garrison BM8560 on the wrist?

Citizen publishes only the 42mm case diameter. It does not publish the thickness, the lug-to-lug or the band width for this reference, so try it on before committing if fit matters to you.

Do either of these need a battery?

No. Both are light-powered — Citizen's E101 Eco-Drive and Timex's solar quartz — so there is no battery to replace and nothing to wind.

Is Super Titanium better than stainless steel?

For daily wear, generally yes. It is lighter and Citizen hardens the surface so it resists the scratching that makes plain titanium look worn. Our titanium versus stainless steel guide covers where steel is still the better answer.
