A GMT watch with a two-tone bezel

Fleuss GMT vs Aquascaphe GMT

Spinnaker Fleuss GMT vs Baltic Aquascaphe GMT

Two microbrand GMTs, both sapphire, both with a screwed crown. One is a true GMT that fits almost any wrist and is not on Amazon. The other is the opposite of all three.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Buy the Baltic Aquascaphe GMT if your wrist is anything short of large: a true jumping-hour GMT on the Miyota 9075, a sapphire bezel insert, 200m, and a 47mm lug-to-lug on a 39.5mm case — but Baltic sells direct only. Buy the Spinnaker Fleuss GMT if you want it on Amazon for less, and your wrist carries 51mm of lug-to-lug, which is the longest published figure on this site.

These are the only two microbrand GMTs on this site, and they arrive at the same idea from opposite directions. Both put a sapphire crystal over a Japanese automatic GMT, both screw the crown down, both state two years of warranty, and neither publishes what an overhaul costs.

Then the specifications diverge in a way that makes the choice unusually clear. The Baltic is 39.5mm with a 47mm lug-to-lug, 200m, and a true GMT. The Spinnaker is 43mm with a 51mm lug-to-lug, 150m, and a caller GMT. One of those is a watch most wrists can wear; the other is a watch for a big wrist that wants to be on Amazon.

We earn a commission on the Spinnaker and nothing at all on the Baltic. We are telling you the Baltic is the better watch anyway, because that is the arrangement this site runs on.

On prices: every buy button on this page reads its figure from the live price layer and stamps the date it was checked, or else reads "Check price on Amazon". No price is written into this text. Service figures quoted here are the manufacturers' own published rates.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01GMT type

A true GMT jumps the local hour hand; a caller GMT makes you set the 24-hour hand instead. Baltic states true, Spinnaker's NH34 is a caller.

  2. 02Fit, from published numbers

47mm against 51mm of lug-to-lug. Both makers publish the figure, which is more than most do, and the 4mm between them is the single biggest difference here.

  3. 03Water resistance and bezel

    200m with a sapphire insert against 150m. Both have a screw-down crown.

  4. 04Where you can buy it

Spinnaker is on Amazon and we earn a commission. Baltic is direct-only and we earn nothing — we still recommend it where it wins.

  5. 05What is identical

A sapphire crystal, a Japanese automatic from a serviceable family, a stated two-year warranty, and no published service price from either maker.

We earn nothing on this link. Baltic sells it directly.

Baltic states the Miyota 9075 is a true GMT, so the local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps when you land and the 24-hour hand keeps home time running. That is the version of this complication people actually want, and it is uncommon under four figures.

A 47mm lug-to-lug on a 39.5mm case, 13.8mm thick, with a double-domed sapphire crystal and a sapphire 24-hour bezel insert. Aluminum inserts fade and ceramic chips; this does neither. 200m and a screwed crown.

Sold direct from Baltic, so there is no buy button here and we earn nothing. Baltic states two years from the date of shipment and publishes no service price, so an overhaul is a quote. The Miyota 9075 is not as widely stocked by independents as the NH series.

Baltic states the Miyota 9075 is a true GMT — the local hour hand jumps independently — which is rare at this level. Add a double-domed sapphire crystal, a sapphire 24-hour bezel, a screwed crown and 200m in a 39.5mm case. Sold direct; we earn nothing on it.

The TMI NH34 is named on the product page, which matters more than it sounds: it is from the Seiko Instruments family that every independent watchmaker already services, so parts and knowledge are not a question.

Sapphire, a screw-down crown, 15 ATM, 13mm thick, and a stated two-year international warranty — more than most microbrands put in writing. It is on Amazon, which means a return window and next-day delivery.

The lug-to-lug is 51mm, the longest published figure anywhere on this site. On a wrist under roughly 175mm the lugs will overhang the edge, and no strap fixes that. It is also a caller GMT, so you set the 24-hour hand rather than jumping the local one.

A named NH34 GMT caliber, sapphire, a screw-down crown, 15 ATM and a stated two-year warranty — and the same 51mm lug-to-lug as the three-hand Fleuss, the longest on this site.

It fails this page because it is not a microbrand, and it fails the sapphire test too — the 5 Sports GMTs use Hardlex.

What it has is the thing neither watch on this page offers: a published service price. Seiko charges $176 to overhaul a 4R, which is a number you can plan around for the next twenty years. Three years of warranty, 41 hours of reserve, 100m.

If you are torn between the two microbrands because of availability, this is the watch that resolves it — 39.4mm, on Amazon, and the cheapest named service path for a mechanical GMT there is.

Identical movement and identical service cost to the SSK001 in a case 3mm narrower. If the 42.5mm SSK001 is too much watch, this is the same purchase in a size more wrists can carry.

The 4mm that decides it

Diameter is the number on the box. Lug-to-lug is the measurement from the tip of one lug to the tip of the other, and it is what decides whether a watch sits on your wrist or hangs off the sides of it. Both makers publish theirs, which already puts them ahead of Citizen and Tissot.

51mm is a lot. It is the longest figure on this site, longer than the 45mm Seiko Turtle and longer than the 45mm Citizen Skyhawk. On a 170mm wrist the Fleuss GMT will visibly overhang. 47mm is comfortable on almost anything above about 155mm.

If you have not measured your wrist, our small wrists guide explains the rule of thumb we use — and why we print the figure on every watch that publishes one.

True GMT versus caller GMT, in practice

On the Baltic you land, pull the crown to the first position, and click the hour hand forward to local time. The minute hand never stops, the date follows, and the 24-hour hand carries on showing home. It takes about five seconds.

On the Spinnaker you do the opposite: the local hands stay on home time and you set the 24-hour hand to the zone you want to watch. For somebody tracking a time zone from their desk, that is exactly right and the cheaper mechanism is not a compromise at all. For somebody actually flying, it is the wrong way round.

Our true GMT versus caller GMT page goes through both in full, including which calibers are which.

Buying direct, and what it costs you

Baltic sells its own watches and nothing else. That means no Amazon return window, shipping from France, and — for us — no commission, which is why the buy slot on the Baltic says where it is sold rather than offering you a link we earn on.

It also means the warranty is a direct relationship with the maker rather than a marketplace seller, which cuts both ways. Our are microbrand watches worth it page covers the support question across the whole category, and Baltic versus Spinnaker compares the two companies rather than these two watches.

Which to buy

Take the Baltic unless 51mm of lug-to-lug genuinely suits you or buying direct is out of the question. It is the better GMT, the better crystal package, the higher water rating and the better fit, and we earn nothing by saying so.

Take the Fleuss GMT if you want a named, widely serviced caliber on Amazon at the lowest money, and you have the wrist for it. And if neither fits — if you want a published service price more than you want a microbrand — the Seiko 5 Sports GMTs are the pragmatic answer at 39.4mm and 42.5mm.

Questions people actually ask

Which is the true GMT, the Fleuss GMT or the Aquascaphe GMT?

The Baltic Aquascaphe GMT. Baltic states the Miyota 9075 is a true GMT, with a local hour hand that jumps independently. The Spinnaker's TMI NH34 is a caller GMT, where you set the 24-hour hand instead.

How big is the Spinnaker Fleuss GMT really?

43mm across and 13mm thick, with a published 51mm lug-to-lug — the longest figure on this site. That last number is the one to check against your wrist, not the diameter.

Can I buy the Baltic Aquascaphe GMT on Amazon?

No. Baltic sells direct only, so there is no Amazon listing and no buy button from us. We still rate it the better of the two watches.

Do either of them publish a service price?

Neither. Both state a two-year warranty, and both leave an out-of-warranty overhaul as a quote. If a published number matters to you, Seiko's 4R34 GMTs are $176.

Is 150m enough for swimming and diving?

For swimming, easily — both watches also have a screw-down crown, which matters more than the number. For recreational diving, neither carries a diver's certification; the Baltic's 200m is the higher rating of the two.
