Watches for dads

Best watches for dads

A watch for a father should outlast the occasion it was bought for. These are chosen for that: tough, serviceable and easy to live with every day.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

The Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB317 is the best watch for a dad here: sapphire, 200m, 70 hours and a three-year warranty in a 41mm case that goes with everything. The Orient Kamasu is the same idea for less, and the Citizen Garrison is the one for a dad who will never wind or service anything.

The best watch for a dad is not the most impressive one in the box; it is the one still on his wrist in fifteen years. That means a watch he will wear every day — so it has to survive yard work, the pool and a wedding — and one that can be serviced when it needs it.

The picks are ranked on the same six specifications as everything else here, and each is labeled for the kind of father it suits. If he already has a watch he loves, the gifts for watch lovers page is the better place to look.

On prices: we publish no figure we have not verified today, so every buy button reads "Check price on Amazon". The retailer's page is the authority.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Everyday toughness

Sapphire and 100m or more on most picks. A gift worn daily has to survive daily.

  2. 02Warranty

Three years or more on four of the six.

  3. 03Legibility

A dial read at a glance, and a date where it helps.

  4. 04Cost to keep

Published service prices where the maker has them.

A watch for every part of his week: sapphire, 200m, a 70-hour 6R35 with a published accuracy tolerance, and a field dial that looks right with a suit or a T-shirt.

41mm with a 46.9mm lug-to-lug, and a published $296 overhaul when the time comes.

This is where Seiko starts publishing an accuracy figure (+25/-15 seconds a day) and fits sapphire. A 6R35 overhaul is $296 against $176 for a 4R36 — a real difference, and one you can plan for.

Sapphire, 200m and a screw-down crown on an in-house hacking automatic, with three years of warranty — the pool, the lake and the boat without a second thought.

41.8mm on a 22mm strap.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

A legible 42mm pilot's dial with the day and the date, sapphire, 100m and an 80-hour H-40 — a watch that answers "what day is it" as well as "what time".

Two years of warranty, and Hamilton publishes no US service price.

Hamilton fits the same Nivachron hairspring here as on the Khaki Field line, and the H-40 runs 80 hours. Sapphire and 100m on a watch this legible is the pilot-watch specification sheet most of the category never manages.

Thin enough for a cuff and rated 100m, with sapphire, an 80-hour Powermatic 80 and Tissot's published $210 service price.

The integrated bracelet is the watch — it cannot go onto a leather strap.

Tissot publishes a US complete-service price of $210 for a mechanical two-or-three-hand watch, which makes this the most predictable Swiss automatic here to own. The 12mm lug width is not a strap size — the bracelet is part of the case.

Light-powered, so it never needs winding or a battery, with sapphire, a Super Titanium case and five years of warranty.

42mm across, and Citizen does not publish the thickness.

Sapphire is the upgrade the 37mm Chandler never got, on a Super Titanium case with Citizen's five years of cover. Citizen publishes neither the thickness nor the lug-to-lug, so try it on before you commit to 42mm.

A 37mm field watch on nylon that runs on light, rated 100m, with Citizen's five-year warranty — the one that can go into the garden and the garage without a thought.

Mineral glass is the compromise.

37mm, 18mm lugs, 100m, no battery, five years of cover. There is very little here to go wrong and almost nothing that will date.

The Skyhawk is the most impressive watch in its box: radio-synchronized time, a chronograph, a perpetual calendar, a second time zone and 200m behind sapphire.

It is also 45mm across, and a module rather than a movement — when the module stops being made, the watch is finished. For a gift meant to last decades, that is the wrong trade unless he will use what it does.

If he flies, it is ranked properly on the [pilot watches page](/guides/best-pilot-watches).

It sets itself by radio, runs on light and is rated to 200m behind sapphire — and it is a module, not a movement. When the module stops being made, the watch is finished, however good the case still is.

Questions people actually ask

What is a good watch for a dad?

One he will wear every day: sapphire, 100m or more, and a warranty of three years or longer. The Seiko Alpinist SPB317 and the Orient Kamasu both qualify.

Is an automatic watch a good gift for a dad?

If he will wear it most days, yes — the wrist keeps it wound. If it will sit in a drawer between wears, a light-powered Citizen is the better gift, because it needs no winding.

What watch should I buy for Father's Day?

The Seiko Alpinist SPB317 for a single excellent watch, or the Citizen Chandler BM8180 for something simple, light-powered and covered for five years.

What size watch should I buy my dad?

Check the lug-to-lug against the watch he wears now. The 40mm and 42mm pages print it for every pick.
