Kamasu vs BN0200

Orient Kamasu vs Citizen Promaster BN0200

Two 200m divers at similar money. One has sapphire and an in-house hacking automatic. The other is Super Titanium, runs on light and is covered for five years.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Buy the Kamasu. Sapphire, a named in-house caliber that hacks and hand-winds, a published 46.8mm lug-to-lug and 12.8mm thickness make it the better watch on nearly every line, and it scores 9.0 — the highest figure on this site — against the BN0200's 6.8. Buy the BN0200 only if you specifically want a titanium case and a watch you never wind.

Full write-up and the measured specifications are further down this page.

These two come up together because they occupy the same slot: a serious 200m diver from a Japanese maker at a price most people can justify. Beyond that they share almost nothing about how they work.

The Kamasu is a mechanical watch with a sapphire crystal. The BN0200 is a light-powered titanium watch with a mineral one. Both will survive anything you are likely to do to them.

The scoring gap here is the widest in this round — 2.2 points — and it is almost entirely crystal and movement. That does not make the BN0200 a bad watch. It makes it a watch you buy for one specific reason.

On prices: every buy button on this page reads its figure from the live price layer and stamps the date it was checked, or else reads "Check price on Amazon". No price is written into this text. Service figures quoted here are the manufacturers' own published rates.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Crystal

Sapphire against mineral. On a dive watch with a bezel you knock against things, this is the difference that shows first.

  2. 02Movement

An in-house F6922 that hacks and hand-winds, against a light-powered E168 with nothing to service and nothing to wind.

  3. 03Published dimensions

Orient publishes 41.8mm, 46.8mm lug-to-lug, 12.8mm thick. Citizen publishes a 44mm case and neither of the other two.

  4. 04Case material

Stainless steel against Super Titanium — lighter, and surface-hardened so it resists the marking that plain titanium picks up.

  5. 05What is identical

200m with a screw-down crown, a steel or titanium bracelet, no published service price, and both on Amazon today.

Sapphire and 200m with a screw-down crown at this money is the combination that makes the Kamasu hard to argue with. Seiko still fits Hardlex at the same price.

The F6922 is in-house, hacks and hand-winds, and runs 40 hours. Hacking matters more on a dive watch than people expect — you set it against a reference and it stays set.

Orient publishes every figure that decides fit: 41.8mm across, 46.8mm lug-to-lug, 12.8mm thick, 22mm lugs. It is thinner and shorter than almost everything in its class.

Three years of cover, longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's two. The gap in the record is a service price — Orient publishes none, which is the only point it drops badly.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

Super Titanium is the real argument. It is lighter than steel and surface-hardened against scratching, and on a 44mm diver worn daily the weight saving is the thing you notice first.

Light-powered means no winding, no battery and no service interval at all. Five years of cover, excluding the power cell, case, bracelet and strap, is longer than anything mechanical here.

The mineral crystal is the cost, and on a dive watch it is the wrong place to save. Citizen also publishes no thickness and no lug-to-lug for a 44mm watch, which on a case this size is exactly where you need the numbers.

Citizen's Super Titanium is surface-hardened, which is the point — plain titanium marks more easily than steel, and this does not. It is the closest thing on this list to a watch you can stop thinking about.

It fails this page on the crystal — Hardlex is not sapphire — and on size, at 45mm.

It is here because it is the only watch of the three that carries a diver's rating rather than a plain pressure rating, and the only one whose maker publishes what an overhaul costs: Seiko's flat $176 for a 4R caliber.

The 45mm figure is misleading. It is a cushion case with no protruding lugs, so it wears shorter than the number suggests. Our Turtle against the Promaster BN0151 page covers it properly.

Seiko rates this at 200m as a diver's watch, not merely water-resistant — screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional bezel. The 45mm figure is misleading: the cushion case has no protruding lugs.

The crystal is where the gap opens

Crystal carries 2.5 points on this site because it is the one specification you cannot upgrade later for sensible money. Sapphire takes all 2.5; mineral takes 1.0. On a dive watch that is a bezel-first object — the thing you turn, knock and set down crystal-up — it is also the specification most likely to show wear in year two.

Our sapphire versus mineral guide covers the hardness difference, and dive watches with sapphire lists every option here that has it.

What light power buys, and what it costs

An Eco-Drive diver never needs winding, never needs a battery and has no service interval you can miss. Against a mechanical watch that wants an overhaul every several years, that is a genuine long-term saving and the reason the BN0200 has a following.

The counter-argument is repairability. A mechanical caliber can be rebuilt by any competent watchmaker for decades; a light-powered module depends on Citizen continuing to supply it. Our automatic versus solar page sets the two out fairly, and the Promaster BN0150 against the BN0200 covers the steel and titanium versions of the Citizen.

Fit, and the numbers Citizen withholds

41.8mm with a 46.8mm lug-to-lug and 12.8mm of thickness is a genuinely wearable diver. 44mm with no published lug-to-lug and no published thickness is a watch you cannot assess until it is on your wrist.

Titanium does take some of the sting out of that, because the weight is lower than the dimensions imply. But if fit is a concern, dive watches for small wrists has the measured answers.

Which to buy

The Kamasu, unless titanium is specifically what you came for. Sapphire, a hacking in-house automatic and published dimensions at this money is the best value in the category and it is not close.

The BN0200 is the right answer for one buyer: somebody who wants a 200m watch that is light on the wrist, needs nothing from them ever, and is content with mineral. That is a real person, and this is their watch. Everyone else should read best dive watches under $500.

Questions people actually ask

Orient Kamasu or Citizen Promaster BN0200 — which should I buy?

The Kamasu. It has a sapphire crystal where the Citizen has mineral, a named in-house automatic that hacks and hand-winds, and it publishes its lug-to-lug and thickness. It scores 9.0 against 6.8. Choose the BN0200 only if you want a Super Titanium case and a light-powered watch you never wind.

Does the Citizen Promaster BN0200 have a sapphire crystal?

No. Citizen fits a mineral crystal to the BN0200, which is the main reason it scores well below the Kamasu here despite the titanium case and the five-year warranty.

Which is lighter on the wrist?

The BN0200. Its Super Titanium case and bracelet are meaningfully lighter than the Kamasu's stainless steel, and Citizen hardens the surface so it resists the scratching that plain titanium picks up.

Are both of these real dive watches?

Both are rated 200m with a screw-down crown, which covers recreational diving. Neither is described by its maker with the ISO diver's marking that the Seiko Prospex Turtle carries.
