SSK001 vs Fleuss GMT

Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK001 vs Spinnaker Fleuss GMT

Two mechanical GMTs at nearly the same money that score exactly the same. One has the better crystal. The other is the only one whose maker tells you what a repair costs.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

They tie at 8.0 each, so break it on fit: the Seiko is 46mm lug-to-lug and the Spinnaker is 51mm, the longest on this site. Buy the SSK001 unless your wrist is over about 180mm. The Spinnaker has the better crystal — sapphire against Hardlex — but Seiko is the only maker here that publishes what an overhaul costs, at a flat $176.

Full write-up and the measured specifications are further down this page.

Mechanical GMTs used to start well into four figures. These two are the reason that is no longer true, and they arrive at almost exactly the same price from completely different directions.

Our scoring puts them level at 8.0 each, which happens rarely and is worth sitting with. They are not level because they are the same watch. They are level because each one is excellent at precisely what the other gets wrong.

The Spinnaker has the crystal you want and will not tell you what a repair costs. Seiko fits a crystal you would rather not have and publishes a flat overhaul price. Pick which of those two you would rather live with, or let the lug-to-lug decide it for you.

On prices: every buy button on this page reads its figure from the live price layer and stamps the date it was checked, or else reads "Check price on Amazon". No price is written into this text. Service figures quoted here are the manufacturers' own published rates.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Crystal

Hardlex against sapphire. Seiko's hardened mineral is better than ordinary mineral and still well short of the Spinnaker's sapphire.

  2. 02Published service price

Seiko publishes a flat $176 to overhaul a 4R caliber. Spinnaker publishes nothing. This is the line that cancels out the crystal.

  3. 03Fit

46mm of lug-to-lug against 51mm — the longest figure on this site. Both publish the number, which is more than most makers do.

  4. 04GMT type

Both are caller GMTs: you set the 24-hour hand, not the local hour hand. Neither is a true traveler's GMT.

  5. 05What is identical

A named mechanical GMT caliber, 22mm standard lugs, a screw-down crown, and both on Amazon at nearly the same price today.

46mm of lug-to-lug against the Spinnaker's 51mm is the practical difference, and on most wrists it is decisive. Five millimeters of overhang is the gap between a watch that sits and one that bridges.

Seiko publishes a flat $176 to overhaul the 4R, and the 4R is the most commonly serviced mechanical caliber in the United States. You can price the next twenty years before you buy.

The Hardlex crystal is the compromise and Seiko has never moved off it at this price. It is harder than ordinary mineral and it is not sapphire.

100m against 150m, and a three-year warranty against Spinnaker's two. The 4R34 is a caller GMT, so you set the 24-hour hand rather than jumping the local one.

The 4R34 is a caller GMT — the 24-hour hand is the one you set, not the local hand — but it is a real mechanical second time zone on a movement whose service price Seiko publishes.

Sapphire is the clear win and it is the thing you cannot change later. The NH34 is also a named, widely serviced GMT caliber, so parts and expertise exist even if the price of the work does not.

150m with a screw-down crown beats the Seiko's 100m, and 13mm is marginally thinner than the Seiko's 13.6mm.

51mm of lug-to-lug is the longest published figure on this site. On a wrist under about 180mm this will overhang, and no other specification compensates for that.

Spinnaker publishes no service price and no power reserve for the NH34 in this watch, and states a two-year international warranty against Seiko's three.

A named NH34 GMT caliber, sapphire, a screw-down crown, 15 ATM and a stated two-year warranty — and the same 51mm lug-to-lug as the three-hand Fleuss, the longest on this site.

It fails this page because it is not mechanical — there is no caliber to service and no overhaul to price, which is the axis these two are judged on.

It is here because it does the job for less fuss: a dual-time pilot's watch rated 200m that runs on light and is covered for five years, with no winding and no service interval.

Our GMT watches for beginners page covers when a mechanical GMT is worth the extra over a light-powered one.

200m, five years of cover and a second time zone from a watch you never wind, service or open. The mineral crystal is the cost, and on a 42mm slab of glass it is a cost you will eventually see.

How two very different watches tie

The Spinnaker takes the full 2.5 points for sapphire where the Seiko takes 1.3 for Hardlex — a 1.2-point lead. It then gives almost all of it back on the cost-to-keep line, where Seiko's published $176 takes full marks and Spinnaker's silence takes almost none.

The remainder is water resistance and warranty cancelling each other out: Spinnaker's 150m against Seiko's 100m, Seiko's three years against Spinnaker's two. The result is a genuine dead heat, and it is a good illustration of what this site weighs. A better crystal is worth about as much as knowing the repair bill.

So break the tie on the wrist

51mm of lug-to-lug is the longest number published by any maker on this site. The Seiko's 46mm is ordinary. That 5mm is the single most consequential difference between these two watches and it has nothing to do with the specification argument above.

If your wrist is under about 180mm, the Spinnaker will hang over the edges and the Seiko will not. Measure the flat top of your wrist before anything else — our watches for small wrists page explains the method, and it applies at every size.

Both are caller GMTs, and that matters

Neither of these lets you jump the local hour hand independently. You set the 24-hour hand to your second zone, which is ideal for keeping track of home while you travel and awkward for changing your own time zone on landing.

If you want a true traveler's GMT, neither of these is it, and our true GMT versus caller GMT page explains the mechanism and lists what is available. Best GMT watches under $500 ranks both of these against the field.

Which to buy

The SSK001 for most people, because it fits more wrists and because a published overhaul price is the rarest thing on any spec sheet. You are accepting Hardlex to get it.

The Fleuss GMT if your wrist carries 51mm comfortably and you want sapphire. It is the better-specified watch on the dimension you cannot upgrade, and the one whose future repair cost is an unknown.

Questions people actually ask

Seiko SSK001 or Spinnaker Fleuss GMT — which should I buy?

They score identically at 8.0 on our six published specifications, so fit decides it. The Seiko is 46mm lug-to-lug and the Spinnaker is 51mm, the longest on this site, so buy the SSK001 unless your wrist is over about 180mm. The Spinnaker has sapphire where the Seiko has Hardlex; Seiko publishes a flat $176 overhaul price where Spinnaker publishes none.

Does the Seiko SSK001 have a sapphire crystal?

No. Seiko fits Hardlex, its own hardened mineral glass, which is harder than ordinary mineral and softer than sapphire. The Spinnaker Fleuss GMT has sapphire at a similar price.

Are these true GMT watches?

Both are caller GMTs. You set the 24-hour hand to a second zone rather than jumping the local hour hand independently, which suits tracking home from abroad more than resetting on landing.

How big is the Spinnaker Fleuss GMT on the wrist?

Large. It is 43mm across with a 51mm lug-to-lug, which is the longest published figure on this site. The Seiko SSK001 is 42.5mm with a 46mm lug-to-lug.

What does it cost to service a Seiko SSK001?

Seiko publishes a flat $176 to overhaul a 4R caliber, which covers the 4R34 in this watch. Spinnaker publishes no service price for the Fleuss GMT.
