How to buy a watch as a gift

Buying for yourself is a question of taste. Buying for someone else is a question of risk — and almost all of that risk sits in two numbers the box does not print.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Buy a 38-40mm case with a published lug-to-lug under 48mm, a standard even lug width, and 100m or better water resistance. The lug width is the real insurance: a 20mm fitting means a wrong guess costs a $30 strap, while an integrated bracelet means the watch either fits or goes back.

The verdict first: for a wrist you cannot measure, buy a 38 to 40mm case with a published lug-to-lug under 48mm, a standard even lug width, and at least 100m of water resistance. Everything else — dial color, brand, whether the movement is mechanical — is taste, and taste is the part you probably already know.

What separates a gift watch from a watch is that two of the usual decisions are taken blind. You cannot try it on them, and you cannot ask what they would put up with. So the sensible approach is not to guess harder. It is to buy a watch where a wrong guess is cheap to fix.

The one number that makes a mistake reversible

Lug width. If a watch has 20mm lugs and it turns out to sit badly, a longer or shorter strap costs about the price of a paperback and takes two minutes to fit — see our watch straps guide and the lug width guide for how to measure one. If the watch has an integrated bracelet, there is no strap to fit. The Tissot PRX 40mm lists a 12mm fitting, the PRX 35mm an 11mm one, and the Citizen Tsuyosa a 9.1mm one. Those are not strap sizes. On those watches the bracelet is part of the case, and if the fit is wrong the only fix is a return.

This is why the gift-safe list below is not the same as our best watch gifts ranking. That page ranks watches on what they cost to keep. This one ranks them on what happens if you got the wrist wrong.

On prices: every buy button on this page reads its figure from the live price layer and stamps the date it was checked, or else reads "Check price on Amazon". No price is written into this text. Service figures quoted here are the manufacturers' own published rates.

How we picked

We have not worn these watches. What follows is what we checked instead, on documents you can open yourself — the same criteria, in the same order, on every roundup on this site. The full method is on the methodology page.

  1. 01Lug-to-lug before diameter

The distance across the lugs is what sits on a wrist. A 38mm case with 47mm of lug-to-lug fits more people than a 40mm case with 50mm, and it is the figure most makers leave off the box.

  2. 02A standard even lug width

The only specification on this list that makes a mistake reversible. 18, 20 or 22mm means a strap in any length is available everywhere, forever. An integrated bracelet means the bracelet is the watch.

  3. 03100m or better

A gift recipient did not choose this watch and will not learn its rules. Anything rated 30m is a watch that has to be taken off to wash up, and that is the watch that ends up in a drawer.

  4. 04A warranty with a term you can read

Scored the same way on every page: the number of years the manufacturer states on its own product page, not the retailer's promise. Register it in the recipient's name, not yours.

  5. 05A published service price

Seiko publishes $176 to overhaul a 4R and $296 for a 6R; Tissot publishes $210 for a complete mechanical service. A gift whose upkeep has a known price is a gift, not an obligation.

This is the safest set of numbers on the site for an unknown wrist. 38mm across with a published 47mm lug-to-lug covers the broadest range of wrists of any watch here, and Hamilton publishes that figure, so you are checking it rather than hoping.

The 20mm lug width is the insurance. If it sits long or short on them, a 20mm strap in the right length fixes it for the price of lunch, and it will still be buyable in twenty years.

Sapphire and 100m mean it survives an owner who never thinks about either. The H-10 runs 80 hours, so it is still running on Monday after sitting on a dresser all weekend — which matters more on a gift than on a watch someone chose for themselves.

The cost is Hamilton's transparency: two years of warranty, and no US service price list, only a European one. You are buying a watch whose upkeep you cannot price before you buy it.

Mechanically identical to the Murph and usually cheaper, because it does not carry a film's name. 47mm lug-to-lug on a 38mm case is a genuinely versatile footprint.

The highest Keep Score of any watch you can buy on Amazon today, at 9.0, and the reason is a gift-buying reason: sapphire, 200m and a three-year warranty on an in-house automatic that can be hand-wound and hacked. There is very little on it for a careless owner to break.

46.8mm of published lug-to-lug on a 41.8mm case is a shorter footprint than the diameter suggests, so it suits more wrists than its size implies. The 22mm lugs are standard and even.

Orient publishes no US service price list, which is the gap against Seiko. The movement is an in-house caliber, so an independent watchmaker can quote you — but you cannot look the number up first.

On paper this is the best value in the category and it is not close: sapphire and a hacking, hand-windable in-house caliber at a price where Seiko still fits Hardlex. Orient's three-year warranty is longer than Hamilton's or Tissot's.

If the recipient is not going to learn how a mechanical watch works, do not give them one. This runs on light: no winding, no battery changes, and nothing to set after it has been sitting in a drawer.

Sapphire, 100m and Citizen's five-year warranty — the longest term of any brand here — on a Super Titanium case that is surface-hardened against the scratching plain titanium picks up. It is also light, which is the specification people actually notice.

Two honest costs. Citizen publishes no service prices and quotes every repair after inspection, and for this reference it publishes neither the thickness, the lug-to-lug nor the band width. On a gift that means you cannot check the footprint or pre-buy a strap, so it scores 7.2.

Sapphire is the upgrade the 37mm Chandler never got, on a Super Titanium case with Citizen's five years of cover. Citizen publishes neither the thickness, the lug-to-lug nor the band width for this reference, so try it on before you commit to 42mm.

The smallest case on this site at 36mm, with a published 44.5mm lug-to-lug behind it. If the recipient's wrist is small, or you know their current watch is under 38mm, this is the lowest-risk thing to buy.

Sapphire and 100m on a solar watch at this money is a specification sheet that should not exist, and it means no winding and no battery changes. The 18mm lug width is standard.

The warranty is where it pays for that. Timex states one year and explicitly excludes the crystal, the strap, the case and the battery, which is most of what fails — so it scores 6.6 despite the sapphire.

The smallest genuinely good watch here. Sapphire, solar, 100m and 44.5mm across the lugs — if you have a small wrist and want to stop thinking about batteries, start here.

If the gift has to look formal, this is the one to buy, and the reason is the footprint: 44mm of published lug-to-lug on a 38.4mm case is genuinely small by modern standards, which is what a dress watch is supposed to be.

An in-house Orient automatic that hand-winds and hacks, with a three-year warranty and a standard 20mm lug width, under a domed mineral crystal.

Read the water rating before you buy it as an everyday gift. 30m means rain and nothing else — it is the rating that ends watches, and it is why this scores 6.3 rather than in the eights. Buy it as the watch they wear to things, not the watch they wear.

A 44mm lug-to-lug is genuinely small by modern standards, and this is the Bambino to buy if the 40.5mm versions never sat right. The domed mineral crystal is the compromise, and it is the one Orient never fixes on this line.

This is a good watch and a bad gift, which is the whole point of this page. Sapphire, an in-house 8210 automatic and Citizen's five-year warranty at this price is genuinely hard to argue with.

Then read the lug width: Citizen lists 9.1mm. That is not a strap size. The bracelet is the watch, so if it sits wrong on the wrist you guessed at, there is no strap that fixes it and no strap shop that can help. Your only move is a return.

Citizen also publishes no lug-to-lug and no thickness for this reference, so you cannot check the footprint before buying. Buy it for yourself after trying one on. Do not wrap it.

Sapphire and an in-house automatic for the money is genuinely rare. The catch is structural: Citizen lists the lug width as 9.1mm, which means the bracelet is the watch. When it wears out, no strap shop can help you.

How to size a watch for someone else

  1. Measure a strap they already own, not their wrist. Lay their current watch strap flat and note the hole they use. That tells you more than a number they will not sit still for.
  2. Or photograph their current watch against a coin for scale, then look up its case size. If their watch is 38mm, a 38mm gift will not surprise them; a 44mm one will.
  3. Then compare lug-to-lug, not diameter. Under a 165mm wrist, stay below about 48mm of lug-to-lug; under 150mm, below 44mm. Our small wrists and large wrists pages list every published figure on this site.
  4. Default to 38-40mm if you know nothing at all. It is the band that suits the widest range of wrists, and the 38mm, 39mm and 40mm pages are where this site's best-proportioned watches sit.

Three specifications that decide whether it gets worn

The three figures worth checking before anything on the dial.
SpecificationWhat to look forWhy it matters on a gift specifically
Lug width18, 20 or 22mmA standard even width means a wrong fit costs a strap, not a return.
Water resistance100m or betterThe recipient will not learn the rules. 30m is a watch that gets taken off and forgotten.
CrystalSapphireA scratched crystal is the damage people see every day and cannot undo. Mineral collects scratches permanently; acrylic can be polished out.
The three figures worth checking before anything on the dial.

Crystal is the one most gift-buyers skip. Sapphire against mineral sets out the difference properly: sapphire is effectively unscratchable in daily wear, mineral collects marks you cannot remove, and acrylic scratches immediately but polishes back with paste — which is why an acrylic watch can be a reasonable gift and a mineral one often is not.

What not to buy as a gift

  • A 30m watch for everyday wear. Fine for a dress watch worn to occasions; wrong for the watch you hope they wear daily.
  • Anything with an integrated bracelet, unless you have seen it on their wrist. The PRX and the Tsuyosa are both good watches and both unfixable if the size is wrong.
  • A watch whose caliber is not published. You cannot find out what servicing it costs, because nobody will tell you what is inside. Our cost of ownership page shows how much that changes the real price.
  • A brass case at 30m with a one-year warranty that excludes the case. This describes several of the watches most often suggested as cheap gifts, and it is why we rank them where we do.
  • A fake, by accident. If you are buying a known brand from an unfamiliar seller, read how to spot a fake watch first.

The papers matter more than the box

Two unglamorous jobs make a watch gift worth more later. Keep the warranty card and the manufacturer's papers, and register the warranty in the recipient's name rather than yours — the term is stated by the manufacturer on its own product page, and it is the manufacturer who has to honor it. And check the seller's return window before you buy rather than after, because the fit problem is the one you are most likely to have.

If you want the gift to carry a known running cost as well, buy a brand that publishes one. Seiko publishes a full service price list by caliber — $176 to overhaul a 4R, $296 for a 6R — and Tissot publishes $210 for a complete mechanical service with 24 months of warranty on the work. Hamilton publishes a European list and no US equivalent; Citizen, Orient and Timex publish nothing. Watches that last a lifetime explains why that single fact outranks most of the spec sheet.

Which to buy

For an unmeasured wrist and a budget that stretches, the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38. For most budgets, the Orient Kamasu — it has the highest Keep Score on this site and the fewest ways for a careless owner to ruin it. For someone who will never maintain anything, the Citizen Garrison. For a small wrist, the Timex Field Post Solar.

Then pick the occasion page for the rest of the shortlist: best watch gifts for the ranked list, gifts for watch lovers if they already own several, and milestone birthdays, anniversaries, graduation and retirement for the ones with a date attached.

Questions people actually ask

What size watch should I buy as a gift?

38 to 40mm, with a published lug-to-lug under 48mm. That band fits the widest range of wrists. If you know their current watch is under 38mm, drop to 36mm — the Timex Field Post Solar is 36mm with a 44.5mm lug-to-lug.

How do I find out their wrist size without asking?

Measure a strap they already wear and note which hole they use, or photograph their current watch next to a coin and look up its case diameter. Both are more reliable than guessing from a sleeve.

Why does lug width matter on a gift?

Because it decides whether a wrong guess is fixable. A standard 18, 20 or 22mm fitting means a strap in the right length solves the problem for a few dollars. An integrated bracelet — 12mm on the Tissot PRX 40, 9.1mm on the Citizen Tsuyosa — means the bracelet is part of the watch, and the only fix is a return.

Is an automatic or a quartz watch the better gift?

Quartz or solar if the recipient will not maintain anything: no winding, and on a solar watch no battery changes either. An automatic if they will wear it most days — it can be serviced indefinitely, which is why mechanical movements score higher here.

Should I buy a watch with 30m water resistance as a gift?

Only as a dress watch for occasions. 30m means rain and handwashing, and a recipient who did not choose the watch will not learn that rule. For the watch you hope they wear daily, buy 100m or better.

Should I register the warranty in my name or theirs?

Theirs. The manufacturer is the one who has to honor it, and the term runs from purchase regardless — Citizen states five years, Orient and Seiko three, Hamilton and Tissot two, Timex one with the crystal, strap, case and battery excluded.

Is it better to spend more on a gift watch?

Not past a point. On this site's own arithmetic the highest-scoring watch with a live Amazon listing is the Orient Kamasu, which sits in the under-$500 band. More money buys finishing, thinness and water resistance, not a watch that is more likely to survive.
